This story easily transports you into another time and place that is new and original, inventive and engaging, and full of adventure. The story opens at the Cottage of Felendeer in the ancient city of Bez where Terra, Shaldarn and Salger are enjoying their ‘hobbling’ years with Illgrrd, the beautiful and gentle wife of the soldier. But while ‘the soldier’ is away doing battle on the Frontier Lands, Illgrrd is lost by Terra and his companions to the feared Ring Dancers. Thus they are faced with the task of bringing this terrible news to the soldier on his return.
But in the end, the soldier’s devastation leads him to embark on a long voyage across the Abroad to reach the Far Off City with his side-men, Pilk and Kanja – and Terra and his two companions. But early on, they stumble upon a group of nobles and their soldiers from the Dark Westing who they have to ruthlessly subdue. Their only prisoner is the Seventh Princess, who has among her possessions a strange and beautiful war-shield that Terra is immediately captivated by. He keeps it as his secret. But little does he realize the power it will give to him, and at the same time the hold it will have over him in the adventures that lie ahead.
The deeper we descend into this, the more we see that Terra and his companions are not so ordinary after all! We travel afar into other cities and lands, and meet powerful and engaging characters. Slowly the mystery of the Immortal unravels, and the nature of the struggle for the Surkling is revealed!
