Touchpoint Reflexology The First Steps, now in its 6th printing, has continued in its popularity. To this day, it ranks among the top manuals of its kind. Yvette's caring for people, whether clients, students or readers, permeates the book along with her gentle humour and dynamic energy. There are hundreds of illustrations to show you the location and application for each reflex. Here is a book that can teach you to become a competent reflexologist. Written in an easy conversational manner, it is dedicated to you, the reader, and is essential reading for both novice and professional.

In Touchpoint Reflexology - The First Steps, Yvette starts you from the very beginning,(how to seat yourself and client, how to use your fingers to give a good session while protecting your hands from carpal tunnels) bringing you, step-by-step to competency. Her descriptions of all  reflexes, their location and application, are clear and hundreds of illustrations make the text understandable.

The First Steps re-introduces you to your body and its own desire to nomalize. Yvette teaches the compression of each reflex, how organs function in concert, relaxation exercises, tricks of the trade, new points, plus information on nutrition, supplements, emotions, colour, chakras, that affect your system.

Yvette shows you the importance of your emotions and their affect in all dis-ease. She explains the role of stress and its effect on the immune system, and gives you reflexology techniques to overcome it. Through Touchpoint Reflexology, The First Steps, you come to understand the complex yet simple language of the body, its function and its use of energy. You learn how to channel that energy via reflex points, integrating information about each organ, its role in the wholistic body.

Her chapter on the Architecture of the Foot, which is the meat of the entire manual, is divided into four sections one containing the name and anatomical location of each body part, the  system it belongs to, and a picture of the reflex location. Another describes the function of that body part, its role in the system, and the food and supplement that is most important to it. A third column tells you how to locate and work the reflex to that body part, and the last having a photogragh of the application of reflexology so you can see/hear in words and see/understand in pictures. In another chapter, Yvette illustrates each system both in the body and feet and correlates different body parts to each other in holistic fashion.

There is a chapter dedicated to "Tricks of the Trade" that covers a multitude of corrections for discomforts, including manipulations to help with bunions. There is information on gaits and how to work on points to balance them. There is even a "colouring book" portion to help you remember what you are learning.

There is no other book as thorough and as easy to read and understand. Yvette's afterword says, "My hope is that your book will become tattered with use as any loved object becomes used and raggedy. May it be for you a 'Velveteen Rabbit', loved enough to lose its newness and its shine - but may the subject be ever new, ever bright and ever delightful."

Chapter 19
PAIN, DIS-EASE, AND LOADED EMOTIONS

Pain is often like a fire alarm, asking you to PAY ATTENTION to your own system. Pain removal will be permanent if you also get to the root cause of the problem and eliminate it, or reduce it if the pain has become chronic. Pain that causes tension, which tightens the muscles, squeezes nerves, alters circulation causing more pain, is chronic. Removing ALL pain from a sprained ankle, for instance, could be dangerous, since the person will then use or abuse it. Use pain control wisely. Leave a bit behind, as a reminder to the person to pay attention.

DIS-EASE is often the body's request for change. Change of job, of lifestyle, of nutrition, of emotions, or of attitudes. Help your friend to search for the change needed. Thought patterns that are less than resourceful can often lead to certain illnesses. Following is a thought-provoking list of some discomforts and the emotions associated with them:

Alcoholism Inadequacy, poor self- image, guilt, and pain too strong to cope with. Alcohol dulls feelings.

Allergies False pride or ego, over-sensitivity

Arthritis Squelched anger, bitterness, a person may feel unloved. Arthritics are most often gentle, sweet, giving, nurturing people, who might like to throttle somebody but wouldn't dream of it.

Asthma Choking back of thoughts, words and emotions, over-protection of self.

Back problems Insupportable load to carry. Lack of support in their lives, economic and emotional support is lacking.

Neck problems Pain in the neck attitude. Inflexibility, refusing to see all sides of an idea. Stubbornness about self and others. Pride.

Sciatic problems Pain in the butt attitude.

Blood pressure HIGH: Long-standing, unresolved emotional problem.
LOW: Defeatism, depression, sorrow.

Constipation Holding on to old ideas, fear of change. Selfishness, stinginess, especially with regard to thoughts and emotions.

Deafness Avoidance of others' communication. Too many internal voices (by voices I mean the voice that said, "what voices? I don't have any voices!")

Diabetes Little belief in life's sweetness. Deep sorrow. Emotional upheaval that may have caused it initially.

Diarrhea Fear. Rejection of the past and present. Getting rid of ideas before they can be absorbed. Somertimes getting rid of old habit patterns before a change of lifestyle or attitude.

Fatigue Resistance. Boredom. A need to change occupations or goals. Inability to use today, today.

Foot problems Lack of understanding. Fear of taking a step in a new direction or forging ahead or standing on your own two feet.

Gall Stones Bitter, hard thoughts

Gout Impatience. Anger. Domineering. Held in feelings of irritation.

Headaches Tension. Emotional upset, hurt feelings, uncertainty, fear. In migraines, inability to cope with relaxation, or coming down from stress. Resistance to the flow of life, and sexual fears.

Heart problems Lack of joy, belief in pain, stress, pressure. Belief that the heart stores emotions rather than its being just a pump.

Hemorrhoids Fear of letting go. Burdens, pressure, tension.

Monopause
problems Fear of aging, loss of femininity. Fear of not being desirable or wanted.

Sinus problems Irritation to particular people. Unshed tears.

Shoulder problems Problems too heavy to bear. Burdens. Work ethic attitudes.

Teeth problems Indecisiveness, little ability to analyze.

Tumors Nursed hurts and shocks.

Ulcers Anxiety, dislike, discomfort, fear, tension with lifestyle, situation and job.

Varicose veins Clogged ideas, discouragement.

These are a composite of some common disorders. Of course there are more emotional reasons for each. Take a good, honest look at yourself and make some new decisionms, new goals. Remember - "If it doesn't work for you, CHANGE it." Do it differently.

Take resposibility for your health and your choices, and help others around you to do the same.

It's a great idea to talk about these concepts during a session rather than the weather or what you bought at Wal-Mart!
