“Are you happy with your life?” Maggie-Leigh asked, breaking the silence. She turned to Daniel, the soft glow of the dash highlighting her concerned features.
“Am I happy with my life?”
“You’re not allowed to answer a question with a question, you know that.”
“Sorry. It’s a loaded question.”
“That’s why I asked. I figure I can learn quite a bit about a person.”
Daniel held onto the steering wheel and pulled back with his shoulder blades, stretching his upper back. “Are you hap—”
“Uh-huh!”
Daniel relaxed. “Not in the rules, okay-okay.”
“Why is it so hard for people to answer that question? Everyone I ask does the same thing. Procrastinates.”
Daniel gave her a surprised look. He turned back to the road. “Your question cuts right to the quick, that’s why. It hits people where it hurts most. In their dreams.”
“I guess I don’t understand why people don’t live their dreams—why live anything else?”
Daniel chuckled. “How old are you?”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“You’re right. It’s not a fair question.”
“Well, I think it is: what does age have to do with anything?”
“You certainly don’t give up, do you?”
“Am I supposed to?”
