It was their first trip to Tennessee. Their uncle Joe would tell them of all the things there, and they would see pictures in their encyclopedias. When the time came, their parents packed them up and they left for Tennessee. They were on the road for nine hours, stopping to rest and eat. Tracy and Cory had many questions about the things they saw on the way there. They saw the Steel Mills as they went through Gary Indiana. They saw Sky scrapers and the Sears Tower, when they passed Chicago Illinois. There was lots of highway before they fell asleep. When they awakened and asked if they were there yet, their parents laughed saying, “Oh no, we have a ways to go”. They had stopped for gas, food, drinks and snacks before starting off again. When finally arriving, they were so thrilled with the beautiful green grassy land, and all the farms. The animals were the biggest they had seen. They saw cotton fields, and fields with Milo grains and Tractors. Their father told them their Uncle Joe has lots of cows, horses, chickens and pigs. They couldn’t wait to see their Uncle Joe and the animals. After what seemed like forever to Tracy, they finally arrived at their Uncle Joes place. Cory and Tracy jumped out of the car with anticipation and ran to the house. Before they could knock, Uncle Joe swung the door open, greeting them with his long beard and wide smile. “Well now” he spoke in his deep voice. “I thought you’d never get here”. He grabbed them both in his arms giving them a huge hug. “Come in and rest yourselves”, he said to Tracy and Cory’s parents. “I was about to sit down to dinner and I’m glad I don’t have to eat alone”. After settling in, Tracy and Cory asked all sorts of questions about the animals. Uncle Joe assured them they’ll have the chance to see everything after dinner. They were so excited they could hardly eat anything. Later Uncle Joe took them out to see the farm and all the animals. Tracy and Cory held the baby chicks. They laughed at how they tickled in their hands. Cory made fun of how the cows mooed, and moved their ears. The pigs oinked and squealed loud, when Tracy and Cory walked towards them. Uncle Joe let them ride the horses after teaching them how to mount and hold on. Father rode around the coral with them. After riding, Tracy and Cory wanted to walk down the road and see the Cotton fields. When Uncle Joe and father agreed, they ran off. They walked, and picked up cotton that was blowing along side the road. Liking how it felt in their hands, They guessed that trucks rolled over it to make it flat for bathroom tissue, and a lot of it was put together and pressed out to make sheets, and clothing. They laughed and walked further up the road laughing and talking. Suddenly Tracy stopped and stared so long that Cory stopped talking, and asked, “What’s wrong”? Tracy pointed saying “look at those trees Cory”. They spell the word iF, and their beautiful. The vines are growing around them; from bottom to top”. They stared with amazement. “I guess they planted the vines around it so they would grow like that”. Cory replied. “No Cory”, Tracy said. ‘That’s the work of nature”. “Oh really” Cory spoke. “Hey”! Tracy said; “let’s ask mom if we can take a picture of it so we can take it back to school and show the class”. They wouldn’t believe us if we just told them about it”!

In the first story, The If Tree, a brother and sister, Tracy and Cory, visit their uncle’s farm in Tennessee. There they discover a life much different than the one they left in the city. They take back with them memories caught on film and in their hearts forever.
In the story of That Old Music, a young girl, fond of hip-hop and her father, a jazz enthusiast, find a mutual bond through the examination and comparison of their different styles of music.

Ms. Muhammad's collection of short stories, introduce young readers to jazz, Africa, foster care, and new ways to celebrate birthdays. Her imagination is as rich as any child's as demonstrated in her story telling.
