With things on the home front less than ideal, Yearless receives a tracking job from the director of SYNCO in San Francisco. Ginger, his partner of fifteen years is to be left on the home front. But this time she pushes to accompany Yearless on this latest trip. Disgruntled and eager to shake her loose, Yearless sends her packing before long.
A convicted killer fleeing San Quentin leads Yearless on a chase over weeks through the backcountry of California. While bringing his captive back, Yearless is surprised by a visit from Dan, clone number three, a traveler from the future. Dan gives Yearless an imperative mission to uncover an ongoing secretive scientific project at SYNCO. High statesmen from the Middle East have bought into the project for lucrative gain with the ultimate goal to sabotage the Federal justice system and beyond. Yearless is ethically obligated to take on the challenge.
Holing up in a vast vineyard in Napa County in a barren shack with his captive, who Yearless has since learned may be innocent of the charges against him, he uses the hideout as a base point to get to the root of things.
Back on the ranch, an unhappy and lonely Ginger manages their prime herd of grass-feed beef and a string of horses she and Yearless bred and raised and broke to the saddle. Disgusted with being cast aside by Yearless more often than not, and ignored and treated as an afterthought, Ginger becomes interested in the friendly neighbor rancher down the road.
Up against walls that should not be, and covert excavations underground, as well as a director who arouses suspicion, Yearless is thrown up against some pretty tough characters. He begins to doubt his capabilities. Dan, forbidden to interfere or interact with anyone else in the time period, offers Yearless some advanced technology, far ahead of the 1950’s.
Several risqué and racy affairs on the road leave Yearless pondering just where he stands and where he’ll end up. Questioning his motives and objectives, he finally comes across what he believes is the proverbial woman of his dreams and sees the rest of his path spread out before him. However, more often than not there are unexpected and even painful twists on the road to discover one’s own true self.
