He runs up against the down and out, slow-witted Boogie, but eventually takes the little man under his wing. When his old partner steps in to charm and comfort the despairing farm woman, Bill’s pride is summoned to the forefront. After a one-sided fight between the partners in the snowy farmyard over the farm woman, Bill tears off again in a blind rage, leaving his younger partner to hold things together. Seeking dissolution from troublesome memories, Bill comes up against the savagery of renegade Indians and undergoes the after-effects of profound revelation.

With some apprehension about mentioning the happening to the woman,Bill unhitched the mare and led her into the stall for fresh water and feed. It was going to be rough for her, for a few days. As was his custom, Bill stopped at the stallion's stall. "We'll give you another try, come spring, fella," he said softly as he scratched the big black under its mane.
