An 18 day cruise through the Panama Canal was filled with excitement and adventure for the Hagers. In Acapulco, Mexico they viewed divers jumping off a cliff, a 125 ft. overhang into the Pacific Ocean. In Nicaragua they visited an active volcano. A whitewater rafting expedition on Corobici River in Costa Rican was a new and exciting adventure. Sailed through the Panama Canal and entered the Caribbean Sea, continuing to Colombia, SA, Jamaica and Cayman Islands.
The Volga Baltic Canal and River Waterway Cruise began in Moscow, Russia and ended in St. Petersburg. Along the waterway, they disembarked at four historic cities, including Uglich, Yaroslavl, Goritzy and Kiszhi Island. Each city had its own unique history, housing beautiful Orthodox churches and other interesting buidings. Many are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
A sixteen day Viking Danube River Cruise consisted of four Balkan countries; Romania, Bulgria, Serbia and Croatia and veering north to Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. A comparison among the once-occupied Balkan countries by Ottoman Turkey for over hundreds of years and later the communist regime, was visible in the countrysides, with the more affluent countries of Northern Europe. The Balkan capital cities still glowed in grandeur, however, and all eight countries visited had long, interesting histories, some dating to the Roman Empire and before. Castles, palaces, armories, Roman excavations, among others, were on display. By visiting in November, the weather turned bitter cold and nightfall began as early as 4 p.m. Nevertheless, an exciting trip.
