The Hagers embark on a 16 day whirlwind guided tour to China, visiting major cities and sites. Arriving in Beijing, first visit was Tiananmen Square, largest square in the world, the Imperial Palace (Forbidden City) and the Great Wall of China. On to Xian they viewed the Terracotta Armored Warriors. Cruised the Yangtze River Gorge and inspected the Three Gorges Dam Site, continuing on the Yangtze to Fengdu, the Ghost City. Along the way, other unique and interesting cities were visited, ending their tour in the seaport city of Shanghai, the busiest container port in the world. Mode of travel was bus, plane, sampan, rickshaw, river cruise and sailing through locks and canals. Pauline narrates her impressions, accompanied by her photos.
England by Land. Motoring British style on narrow, winding roads, the Hagers vacationed two week in England, enjoying the beautiful English countryside. First stop was the Cotswold, a hilly, rural region. Visited historic Tewkesbury Abby in Glouceter county, Sudley Castle, and William Shakespeare's home in Stratford-upon-Avon. On to Bourton-on-the-Water, spending hours at the Cotswold Motor Museum. Continued north to scenic Lake District in Cumbria county. Boarded a car ferry on Lake Windermere to the village of Hawshead. Happened on the home of Beatrix Potter, author of "The Tales of Peter Rabbit." North to postcard-picture Grasmere Village and the home and museum of famed Romantic Poet William Wordsworth. Further north arrived at Ravenglass, and rode the Ravenglass and Eskdale miniature railway. Turning south, last stop was the fortified city of York, noted for its turbulent past. An exciting and historic tour, accompanied with photos at each stop.

Pauline and husband lived in Japan for over two years, 1994-1996. One weekend they spent a night at an authentic Japanese ryokan (inn) at Nikko National Park, Japan. Unfamiliar with the rules of the inn, the Hagers committed several faux pas, not knowing which slippers to wear in the bedroom, how to bathe before entering an onsen (spa) and which clothes to wear for each meal. Pauline describes the lobby, the bedroom, the spa, and the reaction of the Japanese diners inside the restaurant. An amusing and educational travel memoir for persons who intend to live or visit Japan, or for the curious who wonder what this fascinationg country would be like to live there. Pauline commits many faux pas, such as not knowing what slippers to wear when visiting inns, what kimono to wear for dinner, and others. Food shopping was a challenge; unable to read the writings on cans and bottles. Driving on the left side of the road (British style) was horrendous. An 18 day cruise through the Panama Canal was filled with excitement and adventure for the Hagers. In Acapulco, Mexico they viewed divers jumping off a cliff, a 125 ft. overhang into the Pacific Ocean. In Nicaragua they visited an active volcano. A whitewater rafting expedition on Corobici River in Costa Rican was a new and exciting adventure. Sailed through the Panama Canal and entered the Caribbean Sea, continuing to Colombia, SA, Jamaica and Cayman Islands.
The Volga Baltic Canal and River Waterway Cruise began in Moscow, Russia and ended in St. Petersburg. Along the waterway, they disembarked at four historic cities, including Uglich, Yaroslavl, Goritzy and Kiszhi Island. Each city had its own unique history, housing beautiful Orthodox churches and other interesting buidings. Many are protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
A sixteen day Viking Danube River Cruise consisted of four Balkan countries; Romania, Bulgria, Serbia and Croatia and veering north to Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. A comparison among the once-occupied Balkan countries by Ottoman Turkey for over hundreds of years and later the communist regime, was visible in the countrysides, with the more affluent countries of Northern Europe. The Balkan capital cities still glowed in grandeur, however, and all eight countries visited had long, interesting histories, some dating to the Roman Empire and before. Castles, palaces, armories, Roman excavations, among others, were on display. By visiting in November, the weather turned bitter cold and nightfall began as early as 4 p.m. Nevertheless, an exciting trip.
