Sandy Rothenberg knows the future. When the pioneering astronaut returns to Earth, she encounters all the tragedy she’d predicted a dozen years earlier. Her unexpected arrival brings hope to many, but sets off a chain reaction that imperils her life and threatens to ignite civil war.

Descending Star  takes place in a California of thirty years hence, with additional settings ranging from Bronze Age Troy to a planet orbiting Alpha Centauri A. The story focuses on one week in the life of  Cassandra ‘Sandy’ Lee Kwon Rothenberg. On multiple levels, it bridges our high-tech future with the ancient world of the Homeric epics.
 
This is a ‘hard’ science fiction novel, with the exception of Sandy’s apparent spiritual experiences. Descending Star  deals with classic themes such as ‘faith vs. reason’ and ‘passion vs. restraint,’ but my characters don’t always reach the type of resolution common in the genre. Among the story’s factions, personal trust and technological supremacy play key roles.

I have several genre stories in print, including in Analog magazine, and belong to SFWA. This novel has not yet been represented or sold, and I do intend to change that. I've also written two other novels, set in the same milieu. Brief sample sections are posted on my web site.
