The question we need to ask ourselves- being the sheep of his pasture is: “How do we develop our spirits and our inner ears in order to hear His voice alone? What are those attributes that a sheep must have in order to understand the voice of his Master- the Good Shepherd?” These are what we shall be examining in this chapter.
Jesus Christ himself gave us a spiritual recipe that we need before we can hear His voice when he was brought before Pontius Pilate. The book of John 18:37 has this to say: Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. (KJV)
Another pertinent question to ask ourselves is: ‘What is the TRUTH? We can find our answer to this from the prayer of our Lord when he was about to leave his disciples in the book of John17:17 which read thus: Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. (KJV)
The message from this verse is very simple, if we want to hear God speak to us we must desire the TRUTH which is the word of God, that is the written form of it called the logos and the spoken form of it called the rhema in Greek language. We must allow the word to become flesh and blood in our hearts because the book of John 1:14 says: And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (KJV) This was again emphasized by Apostle Peter in the book of 1 Peter2:2 which read thus: As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: (KJV)
If we sincerely want to hear God speak to us continually and we want to recognize His voice without making mistakes we must desire His word in the same way we desire our food for nourishment. There is no shortcut to the WAY. We must not forget that our Lord Jesus is the WAY, the TRUTH (which is the WORD of God) and the LIFE and no one can come to the FATHER except by Him. If we do this with the whole of our hearts, we can be sure that we would grow to the level whereby we shall be able to hear His voice unequivocally.
We can understand this better if we consider a growing child again, as the child continue to enjoy listening to his parent’s way of speaking and the parent’s mastery of words, he begins to recognize his parent’s voice, he then begins to turn to his parent’s direction the moment he hear him speak.
The summary of this chapter is that we must desire the word of God sincerely in order to become qualified to hear His voice.

Removing the Plugs in Your Ear.
Whether we like it or not we must understand that our arch-enemy which is the devil will not want us to hear the voice of God. The earlier we know this the better it is for us in our desire to hear the voice of our maker continually. We must understand that we are in warfare, although many Christians do not have a firm grip of this reality. The book of Ephesians 6:10-17 has this to say: Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (KJV)
The devil know very well that our victory is certain once we are able to hear the voice of our Master, and so one of his strategies is to put a lot of impediments in our ways. These impediments would not want us to study the Word of God; they are like plugs in our ears and we must do our best to remove them. Can you imagine a child who desires to hear his father, while at the same time he has earpieces attached to his ears? It is understandable that he cannot decipher what his father is saying. Therefore we need to get rid of all those habits that have taken over our lives.
The enemy would not want you and I to put on the whole armor of God, he knows the advantage that is to be derived when you arm yourself with all these virtues. He does not want you and I to be truthful, to live right and be in right-standing with our maker because he know that sin will continue to constitute a plug in our ears, thus making hearing God impossible.
We must not forget what our Master told Pilate when he was brought before him, it is the golden rule that we must hold dearly if we desire to hear his voice. Permit me to quote that golden verse again: Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 18:37 (KJV)
Therefore we need to purge ourselves of lies, evil-speaking, gossips, and back-biting if we want to hear the voice of our maker without any hindrance. The psalmist understands the importance of purging from sins and evil as a prerequisite to hearing God when he wrote Psalms 24. Verses 3-5 read thus: Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. Psalms 24:3-5 (KJV)
Finally, in order to hear the voice of our maker we need to purge ourselves of some relationships, and I am talking of relationships that are not spiritually beneficial to you. Peradventure you are into a relationship in which you do not have the peace of God or in which you are not being encouraged to pray or study the word of God or in which you find it difficult to obey God. You would be better off if you break that relationship without delay. Abraham did not hear the voice of God again until he separated himself from Lot- his nephew. Genesis 13: 14-17 has this to say: And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
