Take Your Main Character to Dinner
Writing short fiction is fairly easy. The plots travel a rather simple route from point A to point B. With longer fiction, things are more complex. It is one thing to have a plot going somewhere, but is that plot consistent with the personality of the character?
When I began to experiment with novel length fiction, my creative flow slowed and then stopped. I needed to know that my plot and my character were consistent. I mentioned this to someone. Their advice: Take your main character to dinner.
Now, when I am stuck, I figure my characters are hungry. I send them to dinner. You can learn a lot about your characters over a meal. Where do they eat? Fancy restaurant or diner? Do they prefer to eat at home? What do they eat? Salads or steak and potatoes? How do they eat? Do they nibble or shovel it in? At dinner, my characters can review what has happened already in the story. They can talk about what they should do next. Some of these scenes may end up in the finished product, but most of the time they just help me move on to the next scene.
So, if you find yourself stuck, maybe a dinner invitation is in order.
