Reading is Fundamental --
Over the past years I've heard many stories of domestic violence and various types of relationship abuse. In almost every case, when the victim told his or her story, there was always the part where they said, “I should have known because they [did something odd],” or “Something in my gut said . . . ,” or “My friends told me they didn’t trust them,” or “Something didn’t feel right.”
Usually, there is “writing on the wall”: there are warning signs. There is usually a gut feeling that we ignore. We see the writing on the wall, and it is as if we have forgotten how to read. Sometimes we forget how to read because that other person is so cute or says all of the things we’ve been wanting to hear. In the beginning of the relationship, we totally ignore the little things that annoy us.
Sometimes protecting ourselves is just a matter of remembering something that a relative, a parent, or guardian has said or keeping in mind something that you have read or seen on television. Perhaps, it was something as simple as not getting into cars with strangers, not drinking too much at parties, always having money for a taxi, or knowing whom you’re going out with.
Sometimes being safe and respecting ourselves is as simple as using our own common sense and trusting our judgment instead of following the crowd and trying to please someone or everyone else.
