Unit 7 of the Blackguard quietly and smoothly eased their canoes through the black night toward the distant bobbing anchor lights of the British armada of ships anchored a few miles off Frying Pan Shoals and Cape Fear.
Scattered patches of fog concealed Unit 7’s four canoes as they steadily made their way toward the darkened ships at anchor. After an hour of paddling, the canoes neared the first ship to within 50 feet. The anchor mates onboard the ship did not notice the silent approach of the saboteurs. Deferring to his canoe-mate, Captain Knight switched places and became the support member for Private Toby Knight, who was far superior in talent with bow and arrow. Toby whispered to Knight, “Capp’m, I believe I can put an arrow right through one of those cannon ports and maybe set off they gunpowder.” Miles whispered back, “Aye, then fire when ready Toby.” Toby set the arrow on the bow and leaned around so Miles could set a spark to it with his flintlock pistol; almost immediately the arrow flamed. Toby took careful aim and let the arrow fly slightly upward from his level down in the canoe, right through a lower tier cannon port. Then the process was quickly repeated on a cannon portal at midships. As Toby was deftly aiming for another cannon port Miles noticed that the first arrow fired had already set ablaze that part of the lower cannon deck. Captain Knight and Private Toby Knight almost immediately began paddling away from that first ship and the expected blast from the black powder stores behind the cannons. Seeing the flames had begun flaring out the 3 cannon portals Miles and Toby paddled fiercely away from the ship. They were no more than 50 yards beyond it when all hell broke loose, “Kaboom! Blam! Varoom!” The shock wave from the blast nearly knocked the men from their canoe. For a moment they feared that they would be blown out of the water themselves. As they recovered and paddled even harder away from the burning ship they could hear the screams and shouts of the British crew members and soldiers caught in the blasts and fires.
The big shore boats on the port side of the ship were ablaze already as were the ones on the starboard side. Toby had also hit them with fire arrows.
Miles looked about him to try and see how the other canoes were progressing with their attacks on the more distant ships. He looked to his left and saw flaming arrows, one after the other arching toward the deck and cannon portholes of another ship. Off to his right he saw a warrior stand up in his canoe and fire his first arrow toward another warship. After the fourth ship ablaze as well, all the canoes turned toward land again. After a few minutes all four ships had exploded and were in flames. The explosions and subsequent concussions were felt by the men of the Blackguard as some of them furtively glanced back to see the four ships ablaze.
