The Rapier jet fighter and bomber version were decades ahead of their time and had been stamped to go into service in March and April of 1940,
Through intelligence mediums, the, United States learned of the aircraft and its bomber companion and negotiated for them to be shipped to America, to be tested in conjunction with a new weapon that they themselves were testing; the atomic bomb. It was seen as the ideal strike partnership, astonishing speed and deadly delivery, with un paralleled destruction. Britain agreed with reservation. It was a decision that would prove to be catastrophic. Just days into the North Atlantic voyage, the ships carrying the aircraft, the entire development and construction teams, were torpedoed and sunk by German U-Boats.
