‘BAM! BAM!’ He heard them pop open. The ship lurched strongly to one side. The attenuators prevented the back flow of energy from entering the ship during surges. There must be some residual power charge in the capacitors for the blowback attenuators to function properly. They failed.
“Oh residue…” He gulped.
Sloodin felt the banging of the exterior hull against the atmosphere as he spun down from orbit. The ship was out of control. For a few moments he tried to maintain his grip on the optical telescope and drive the ship, but, he immediately got nauseous at the spinning view. He let the telescope go and thought about hiding in his resting chamber. Insertion in his personal niche was the best place to weather a crash, or to die.

I'm not your typical science fiction fan - but this isn't a "typical" sci fi book. FYI - Volume 2 is actually the first book in the series, and I'm now waiting anxiously for Volume 1, or 3, or whatever the author writes next. The human characters and how they deal with the apocalyptic scenario forced upon them are as gripping as the very-plausible situation they find themselves in and the aliens who brought it about. The minimal human and alien face to face interaction occurs during the all-too-human scenario of making a religion out of mystery. The author brings his knowledge of machinery, engines, geography, weather patterns, oceanography, travel and human frailties to write an engrossing novel that should give us all pause for thought.
