I'm not your typical science fiction fan - but this isn't a "typical" sci fi book. FYI - Volume 2 is actually the first book in the series, and I'm now waiting anxiously for Volume 1, or 3, or whatever the author writes next. The human characters and how they deal with the apocalyptic scenario forced upon them are as gripping as the very-plausible situation they find themselves in and the aliens who brought it about. The minimal human and alien face to face interaction occurs during the all-too-human scenario of making a religion out of mystery. The author brings his knowledge of machinery, engines, geography, weather patterns, oceanography, travel and human frailties to write an engrossing novel that should give us all pause for thought.
