Each day’s entry is in the original Arabic followed by the English translation.  Included are photos and documents restored from Aamir’s laptop, by the FBI, after his capture.  He was keeping the diary in the event he was killed or captured so that his family would know of the part he played in the great Jihad against America.  Excerpt Day Fourteen Today I traveled south to exit 13C on the Turnpike and into the administration building’s parking lot for the Citco / Litton fuel storage facility. On an employment application I claimed to have had six years experience as the Fuel Transportation Manager for Exxon / Mobile at the Southampton Refinery in the UK and four years as the Ground Transportation Manager for Royal Dutch Shell in Cologne, Germany. It should take quite a few weeks to verify employment as the Dutch and English are notoriously slow in answering almost any inquiries but especially those from a competitor. At the end of two interview sessions and a few simple technical questions I was offered the position of Assistant Fuel Transfer Manager, pending the verification of my background, a physical and psychological testing. I was also given a detail tour of the entire facility including the computer flow-control area located in the administration building. There are 191 storage tanks with 34 of them in close proximity to the Turnpike. Of the 34 eleven contain petrol and nine hold propane gas. They are all connected to a main transfer pipe for receiving or sending from or to the harbor about two kilometers to the East. The pipe passes directly under the Turnpike roadway bed. A detonation in the pipe could destroy both the harbor facilities and several storage tanks while closing the roadway for days or weeks. Security is light as only a single guard is on duty, from 6am until 6pm, at each of two stations with card-controlled gates that provide entry to maintenance access roads throughout the site. According to published figures and extrapolated actual counts approximately 300 thousand vehicles pass this location each weekday going to and from New York City. There are similar and larger storage facilities in many other states such as Texas and California however, other than Sunoco’s Philadelphia refinery, none are as close to a large city as are these. I have been informed that one of our people who was assigned to the casino hotels in Atlantic City has taken ill and cannot complete his surveys so I, along with my old friend Saalim, have been ordered to review and complete his assignments. Tomorrow I have scheduled the investigation of two private airports within my area and after that is complete Saalim and I will plan our visit to Atlantic City. Day 15: "Today I completed one of my primary tasks to determine the feasibility of employing private aircraft to intercept and destroy commercial flights preferably during take-off, over heavily populated areas of New York and New Jersey. Ignoring Newark International there are five such airports within my assigned area of which only two could provide a solid base for such action. Of the two, the most logical and easiest to employ is Teterboro as it caters to personal aircraft as well as several small to medium commercial freight carriers."

Seven years after 9/11, Lyndhurst resident Sam Corkin has gotten a sense that many people don’t think another attack could happen. He’s trying to prove them wrong in his book, "My Days in the Beast – The Diary of a Holy Warrior in America." Those were the words of Aamir Al-Mamoura, a radical Islamic, referring to the best place to acquire private aircraft to intercept and destroy commercial flights. The excerpt comes from a diary he had compiled during his three-week period of scouting potential targets in New Jersey to help coordinate a domestic terrorist attack. Al-Mamoura was arrested by the FBI before any attack could occur, but it brings insight into the fact that the attacks of Sept. 11 were only seven years ago and the threat still remains real.

That was the message Lyndhurst author and publisher Sam Corkin, pen name J.C. Clark, wanted to relay when he made up the character Al-Mamoura and fictionally wrote his diary. Although the diary and characters are fictional, Corkin said he was inspired to write the book because he had several ties to the events on 9/11. The events he said include his daughter having a canceled business breakfast that was scheduled to be at Windows on the World and his own viewing of the second tower crashing down while sitting in Turnpike traffic. He said a family member, an FBI agent, had alerted Homeland Security prior to the attacks of suspicious flight training. Since the attacks, however, Corkin said he has sensed that many people have let their guard down in thinking another attack could not occur.

"This is a fictional book, but what is in here is based on a lot of factual information," said Corkin, a retired information technology worker. "I think folks in general, especially around this area, even here in Lyndhurst, forget what they saw on 9/11. A lot of people are more concerned with what color lipstick Angelina Jolie is wearing than what happened."

The research for the book took two years to compile and was mostly Web driven visiting sites pertaining to the attacks on 9/11 as well as those dealing with Jihad and extremist Palestinian ideals. The premise is after arresting Al-Mamoura, an Egyptian born with close ties to Hamas, his laptop is recovered by the FBI with both his diary and photos of North Jersey locations, or targets, on the hard drive. The diary, covering his three-week occupation of North Jersey in search of potential targets, was written for the benefit of his family in the event of his death or capture. Corkin wrote the diary in English first and accompanying it is a full-text translation into Arabic.

The book got some attention even before Corkin published it. Last year, while in Cape Cod, he and his wife Patricia got a call from their daughter that the FBI had been by the house. Neighbors were questioned. A business card left at the house asked Corkin to call the agents immediately.

"One was an FBI agent, one was with Homeland Security. We had a very long discussion. They asked for my notes, asked who I had spoken to, my contacts...general questions like that. They wanted to know if Aamir was real," said Corkin. "I’m not sure why they came and they wouldn’t tell me. Maybe it was the Web sites I was on, maybe the amount of translating services I used on the Web. They said they couldn’t prevent publication and they didn’t."

Although fictional, many of the details outlined in the faux diary actually are reality-based and hit eerily close to home. On Day 8 for example, Al-Mamoura scopes local "soft" targets as he had some downtime to scope out the local area. Presumptively, he had been staying at a Meadowlands area hotel. "Lyndhurst has two railroad stations on a route called the Main Line that connects with other train service into New York City. Rutherford’s only station, linking to the same location, is on the Bergen County Line," reads the excerpt. "All three stations are quite busy during the morning and evening rush hours and could be considered as reasonable soft target."

The details and worries that come along with instances such as these still remain on the minds of many, according to Corkin, but he said it usually takes something to happen until action is actually taken to rectify it. On Day 15 for instance, when Al-Mamoura was investigating the feasibility of Teterboro, real life events did actually take place after 2001 that showed the borders of Teterboro aren’t ironclad. An 18-year-old girl, although an accident, careened of the road in 2006, broke through Teterboro’s fence and came to rest after clipping a fueled up jet on the tarmac.

"If an 18-year-old can accidentally breach the security fence and drive straight onto the tarmac into a fully-fueled aircraft, just imagine what a psychopath or terrorist could do," said Congressman Steve Rothman, following the young woman’s accident. Since the event, Teterboro has embarked on a $15 million overhaul of perimeter intrusion measures including upgrades to sensors, cameras and fencing.

Corkin said he hopes the book is used more as a tool to raise awareness of the imminence of another possible attack and not as a stereotypical depiction that associates terrorism with the Islamic religion.

"I wanted to write something that made people say, ‘Jesus, this really could happen’," said Corkin. "I learned a lot about Muslims and their religion. It is and can be a religion of good if not corrupted."

When J. C. Clark took an early retirement from his job in Bridgewater with standard benefits and didn’t have to deal with investment trauma, he decided to fill up his free time by writing a fictional novella called “The Diary of a Holy Warrior.” The book is unique in that it has Arabic translations of the English entries side by side throughout the book. It is clearly written and well researched, giving the reader a lifelike encounter with an Islamic Fundamentalist Extremist on a Jihad – a word Islamists use to indicate a holy war against all non-Muslims as a religious duty.

The book is an attention grabber not only because it employs places our coverage area readers would be familiar with and probably pass by on a daily basis, but because it brings home the reality of possible militant cells in our midst in an area that has been named by the emergency management authorities at risk to terrorist attacks.

The book is an easy read but an informative one, giving a realistic blueprint about the extremist’s dedication to destroy the American way of life but also makes a point to distinguish terrorists from everyday Muslims.

There is a glossary of common Islamic terms and organizations (actual), photos of local targets and diagrams and maps to give the story an extra slap of realism. There is a timeline of significant Middle Eastern events from 1964-2006 (these are true events) and a conclusion that is part entertainment and part wake-up call. I recommend the book as a primer in terrorist tactics and terrorist ideology. It is not a call to racism but a call for awareness of what evil may be lurking in our very backyard.

“After 9/11, I felt that people just forgot all about it,” Clark said. “I saw (the Twin Towers) fall down since I was stuck in traffic back in 2001.”

The author said his daughter had a meeting scheduled the morning of the Attacks on America at Windows on the World, a restaurant on the 106th and 107th floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. At the time of the attack, the restaurant was hosting the Waters Financial Technology Congress. Luckily, she didn’t make it since a few days earlier they changed the meeting to mid-town Manhattan.

“She had just gone through the Trade Center when the first plane hit,” he said. “Secondly, I have a family member who is an FBI anti-terrorist agent who was the agent who wrote the memo warning about Rayed Mohammed Abdullah Ali taking the flight training in Phoenix, Arizona.”

While the agent’s name could not be revealed, Clark said he did testify before the Senate during the hearings after the traumatizing event that shook our financial center and put everyone on the lookout for further attempts. The author said that he became annoyed when talking to people who are currently complacent about the possibility of another attack.

“I figured if somebody was out there, that’s exactly the way they would go about it because they (the Islamic Fundamentalist Extremists) do write and record everything. They are far more organized than people would give any credence to,” he said. “They’re run almost like a business, – like a corporate structure, from what I’ve learned.”

Clark took over two years to research terrorists, 9/11, and the various organizations that appear in this startling book. He also surfed the Internet for as many Islamic Web sites that could be translated in English. When he and his wife were in Cape Cod visiting friends about a year-and-a-half into the research, his daughter called and said that the FBI and Homeland Security agents were looking for him. “I don’t know how they found out about it – maybe because of the sites I visited, and the translation services that I’ve used (for the Arabic entries in the diary,)” he said.

“I was just going around and thinking, ‘If I wanted to blow this up, how or what would I do,” he said. “While working I would drive down the Turnpike to the Parkway and every day would pass those fuel storage tanks containing everything from heating oil to propane.”

One day he saw a man standing on the back of a truck taking photos of the various roadways and tanks. “I called 9-1-1 but before they got there he was gone. I’m absolutely convinced that it’s not President Obama or anything to do with him,” he said. “It’s hate of America and you can’t negotiate with radical Muslims any more than you can negotiate with any religious fanatic.”
