Those Who Reveled
Those who have reveled in Hedwig Gorski's performances with the East of Eden Band will enjoy having the texts to these marvellous performance poems, my favorites being "Intellectual Love" and "There's Always Something To Make You Happy." It's very comforting to know that in this age of crass materialism and self-aggrandizement there are still poets like Hedwig Gorski to speak to the heart--and mind. She is in a league of her own, and the fact that she's poetry's best kept secret is fine with me. She's completely uncompromising, and in this sense in the tradition of Cid Corman, Ted Enslin and other poets who have refused to sell out, whatever the cost to themselves: a Romantic conception of the poet in the attic, perhaps, but integrity and love of the Muse are not marketable commodities. The simple fact that Hedwig Gorski continues to perform is testimony to the durability of the human spirit. To hell with all the academics who are not even aware of her existence. I agree with most of the things we real fans of her work feel. Gorski is probably among the most underappreciated leaders of new trends in writing and performance. More people know about her than have read or listened to her work and that is sad because it is available for such low prices on amazon. There is little taste for avant garde work these days, not like the late 1970s that spawned greats like Hedwig Gorski, Laurie Anderson, Patti Smith, and other leader women artists using text-based performances to make a point.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
