As they backed out of the driveway, she knew Joe was standing in the doorway, but she didn’t want to see him. This was the last time she would be in this driveway. The last time she would be here. It was the last time . . .
I recommend "Shadows in the Heart" for anyone who likes a plucky heroine who rises from adversity--in this case, the horror of an abusive marriage. The author provides a signed copy--a nice touch--and explains in the preface that the story is based on personal experiences. While it has some of the predictability of a traditional romance, "Shadows in the Heart" does have suspense, and enough descriptive detail to make the lives of both heroine and villain seem real.
