Emma's Memoirs

Category:  Memoir
Type: Non-Fiction

This book is the sequel to Prairie Rattlers, Long Johns and Chokecherry Wine. Publish America will release it soon. It's a story of the rest of my life from childhood to retirement and the elderly years.

This is a portion of the first chapter:

Finding My Soul Mate

Sister Ruth and I graduated from Sorum High School in June of 1939. Ruth, sister May and I felt quite grown up. May had only one year of high school left and by then our eight older brothers and sister Anna left hone one by one to marry or start their careers. The three of us realized we would soon be leaving the prairie and Spring Creek Farm. The youngest three of twelve siblings, we needed to make some future life decisions.

My two sisters and I sat on the bed in our upstairs bedroom talking while we organized our clothes after getting home from high school-- Ruth and I for the last time.

After some sobering thoughts, I said, "I wonder where we'll all be five years from no.”

"I know one thing”, Ruth said. "I'm going to get out of South Dakota and away from the family and find out what's out there in this world."

"Not me," said May. "I want to stay here and marry my boyfriend Cliff and be a rancher's wife in a few years."

I said, "I think I'll go to Chadron, Nebraska to Business College because I have a scholarship there.  I'll learn to be a bookkeeper or accountant." I hadn't decided for sure yet, but I wanted a career before marriage, and I hadn’t yet found anyone I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I could tell Dad wanted me to date a young man from church.

Excerpt

I spend most of my time writing and Ormie spends a lot of time on the golf course. As Carl said long ago, “We are having fun going down the other side.” We will be here till the good Lord decides our time is up.

Love your title. And I am interested to hear about whether or not the narrator did leave the prairie town.
