Thema Mundi
This session explains the first principles of Hellenistic astrology, as viewed through the lens of the Thema Mundi chart. Much of the astrology we take for granted today stems from this archetypal model, and an full appreciation of the Thema Mundi chart can only deepen and enrich the participants’ current use of astrology.
Rulership
The concept of the Rulership Tree has been developing over a number of years after experiencing the frustration of both students and teacher alike, as we grapple together to extract the true essence of planetary rulership. This model is intended to unite the chart into a practical and comprehensive unit so that all aspects, whether through planet, sign, or house, can be tied together to give a true and logical interpretation of the individual’s life.
Sighting
The whole idea of Greek optical theory was the concept that separate and independent bodies, once in sight of each other, were never the same again. The gift (or curse) of Sight meant that each was mysteriously connected with the other, so that their energies intermingled, interconnected, and affected the other’s expression, character and behaviour. This session uses practical examples to examine the impact of this theory, and extends it in exploring how it affects our interpretation of astrology through the magic of Sight.
The Noddings
An exploration of an ancient technique where the Moon, based on the position of the New Moon before birth. This sets a template whereby the Moon, according to her condition, grants benefit or difficulty to planets and areas of life. An opportunity to explore and apply a technique which has not been used in modern times.
The Moon’s Nodes
The imaginary axis created by the Moon's orbit crossing the ecliptic, the Moon's Nodes describe the nature and purpose of the individual's journey. The session will examine and explore the origins of the Nodes and provide a working model for the interpretation of the Nodes in a natal chart.
Combustion & Cazimi
Planetary expression is enhanced or hampered by the planet’s relationship to the Sun and this is related to the movement through their cycles. The session will explore the astronomy and its implications on the planet’s expression in a nativity.

The authors of Scala Coeli: the Ladder of Heaven, Mari Garcia and Joy Usher also run the Astro Mundi School of Astrology. Scala Coeli is a collection of six essays devoted to the philosophy and application of astrological principles. Mari and Joy are very experienced strologers, well known for their depth of knowledge and understanding.
If I could make an analogy to the way we eat in the modern world: just as we have ‘fast food’ and ‘slow food’ (the type which is prepared lovingly without consideration for time and eaten at a civilised and leisurely pace); then Scala Coeli is like slow food.
This is the book which you read ad digest on the favourite armchair at a leisurely pace, television and computer off, perhaps in front of a fire, with suitable food and drink on a side table to sustain the brain and maximise enjoyment without distraction.
For this is a book to be treated with reverence. Principles are explored in depth with an eye to their practical application in an astrological consultation. Beginning students will gain much from Scala Coeli and experienced astrologers will be delighted at the depth and exploration of astrological themes.
Joy’s essays include: Thema Mundi: the Birth Chart of the Universe (an exploration of its powerful influence on astrology); The Rulership Tree (applying the essence of planetary rulership to chart interpretation); and The Gift of Sight (the theory of aspects).
Mari’s essays include: The Moon’s Noddings: Benediction or Curse (a little known ancient technique); The Dragon’s Path: the Moon’s Nodes in Astrology (explores the theory of the Nodes and their interpretive application); Combustion and Cazimi (the relationship of the planets to the Sun).
The introductions to their respective group of essays were enjoyable reading and well worth the effort spent.
There is so much to recommend this book. It is a rare astrological work, written with sensitivity and contemplative depth. Take your time and read it slowly, without haste!
