A wealthy widow, dishonest relations and a deadly dessert create a new case for Jacob and Sarah.

It was thoughtful of William and Imogen Pascoe to come to look after their Aunt Eleanor, an elderly widow in poor health. It didn't hurt that she also possessed a considerable fortune and her only son was three thousand miles away. But then things begin to go wrong, starting with the sharp-eyed neighbor who questions their motives, followed by an unexpected arrival and an equally unexpected death. As more uncomfortable truths are revealed, clock repairer Jacob Silver and his wife Sarah are drawn into another criminal case, where a pudding may provide the proof needed to solve it.

Excerpt

"Tell me all about Mrs Penrose.”
Even after almost six years in her company, Jacob still wasn’t quite used to the way Sarah’s agile mind darted from subject to subject. He knew there was no point in insisting that she rest for a while longer after Eva’s birth, so he simply answered the second part of her comment.
“There’s not much to tell, to be honest. I was only there for a few minutes. So I can report only two facts of any interest; Mrs Penrose is rather elderly and appears to be either crippled or suffering from some illness, because she was in a wheelchair, and her nephew, William Pascoe, seems to be in charge of the household.”
“Got his feet well and truly under the table, then?”
“I would say so.”
Sarah studied his face. “Was he rude to you, Jacob?”
“Only moderately. As long as he pays me, I can tolerate it.”
“Well, he’s new in Witney. He’ll soon learn that people have come to like you.”
“That may be stretching the truth slightly, but at least I’m not having mud and eggs thrown at my door now, as I did in the beginning.”
“Horrible people,” Sarah said, wrinkling her nose in distaste. “Is Mrs Penrose rich? I’d think so, if she lives in Church Green.”
“Reasonably wealthy, I would say. The house is well-furnished and there are several servants. I imagine she was left with a substantial inheritance when her husband died.”
“And that’s what that Mr Pascoe is after, mark my words. Trying to get in good with her, especially if she’s not very well, so when she dies, she’ll leave everything to him.”

Professional Reviews

Entertaining murder mystery and wonderful characters!
I love this series. I've become so invested in the evolving lives of Sarah & Jacob throughout 15 books (16 counting Sarah's Story} and I have never gotten tired of it. This was a wonderfully written murder mystery as usual. There's a new baby girl in the family so with 2 little ones it curtails Sarah quite a bit but doesn't stop her active mind. The theorizing and deductive reasoning between Jacob and her is so entertaining and of course they help the police solve the mystery. I was glad to see that Grandmother Martyn had a more prominent role in this story and she & Sarah are getting even closer. They are really so much alike despite their different stations in life. Sure hope there are more. I'm really looking forward to the next one already!

Great characters, excellent flow of the storyline
I enjoyed the latest book in this series.. as usual, exceptional characters and a great read.. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to read it.
