An introduction to project management principles you can use in your everyday projects, like writing a book or organising an event.

Projects involving billions of dollars require serious project management by highly qualified and experienced project managers.

You probably won’t be doing any of that if you’re looking at this book, but that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from applying the principles of project management to your everyday work or personal projects.

In Everyday Project Management, author Peter Mulraney uses a conversational style to demystify project management for untrained project managers and gives you access to tools the professional use - without having to read hundreds of pages or take a test.

Everyday Project Management is informed by Peter’s twenty years of playing in the project space in banking and government, and his application of project management principles to writing and publishing numerous books.

Excerpt

You do not need formal project management certification to manage everyday projects. All you need is common sense and a framework, like the everyday project management framework, to work with.
You do not need a formal project to apply project management principles to your work. These principles work for any task that requires the completion of a series of activities.
Project management is simply applying self-discipline to your work habits. It’s about taking the time to define what you’re setting out to do, and planning how you will do it, before launching into the doing.
You don’t need any fancy equipment or software. All you need to get started is a pencil and paper or a pen and Post-it Notes. For most everyday projects, a spreadsheet is about as sophisticated as you need to go for planning and reporting purposes. You can even draw a critical path map in most spreadsheet applications, but the easiest way to construct a critical path map is to use Post-it Notes on a wall or a whiteboard.

Reviews for "Everyday Project Management"

Reviewed by Ronald Hull 6/11/2016
I can see where your book may be useful for those afraid of the complexities of projects and often spend too much money getting others to manage for them. I have managed countless small projects getting them done my way and saving money all the way, often doing much of the work myself. My best personal project was designing and building my dream home, a solar passive, low maintenance beautiful home in a wooded setting.

I have taught production and operations management at the college level, assisted with project management and managed a multimillion dollar energy retrofit project. I used PERT (Planning, Evaluation and Review Technique) to plan my doctoral program and finished in 2 1/2 years. Like you, I've found that a simple spreadsheet can work just as well as complex and expensive project planning software.

Good luck with your new book.
