The opening months of the Civil War sees Missouri subjected to a violent take over by Federal guns. In Jefferson City, the state's capital, and largely sympathetic with the south, the elected governor must flee or be arrested as a traitor.
Like all Missourians, Irish immigrants Fanny Moone and her strong willed mother must choose sides. Dee Moone, owner of a respectable boardinghouse, is staunchly pro-Union as is her lover Otto Zimmer. But Franny makes a clndestine marriage with Hy Wilcox, local farm boy turned guerrilla nightrider. He allows his bitterness against the North to eventually destroy him.
Into the city's cauldron of intrigue rides handsome, mysterious Captain Josiah Scarborough, U.S. Cavalry officer, ordered to the city to capture a rogue deserter from his regiment. Jacques Verboise, a giant of a man, part Belgian fur trapper and Pawnee Indian, left the U.S. Cavalry to become the vicious outlaw leader of Hy's gang.
When Captain Scarborough meets beautiful, wild Franny the attraction between them is incendiary and makes her regret her willful elopement to the depths of her soul. While Missouri bleeds, Franny is forced to decide between her loyalties and her heart, and Scarborough must decide between his heart and his honor.
Throughout the bloody first year of the Civil War in Missouri, warriors on both sides believed their cause--righteous.

Franny swore, using curses she often thought but never uttered and ended her tantrum with, "Damn you, Josiah Scarborough. I didn't come all this way only to have us both burn to death!"
Fumes burned her lungs and smoke caused her eyes to water, but she kept shaking him. When, at last, his eyes opened, he put his arm over her shoulders. Suddenly the back door burst into flames and a gust of fire whooshed into the kitchen. Consuming all in its path, the flames bore down upon them."
This book seems to have it all! Action packed page after page making this a must read book in my opinion! A super job by a super writer!
