Below is an excerpt from the story. Poverty’s a real drag; it’s not noble at all and it doesn’t choose color. So it’s no wonder that I’d fall in love with the first person who came along who said he loved me. Felix wasn’t a drug dealer when I met him, he only decided to be one when he learned how tough it was to refinish furniture all day long. He roughened his hands just so he could pay the rent on a small overpriced room in Harlem. I was sitting on the front stoop, a little high from the amphetamine I had swallowed earlier. I was roughhousing with my three year old niece, tickling her and leaning her backwards so she’d squeal. “How does this feel? Do you like this?” I asked Brianna. She was giggling like crazy when I swung her around. Just then Felix walked by with my friend Chatter, aptly called because he never shut up. Chatter had been hittin’ on me for about a month, but I wasn't attracted to him. Both were wearing bell bottom jeans. Felix had a two inch decorative trim going down the seam of his pants on both sides. It was a pretty embroidered Aztec design and was mostly gold in color mixed with orange.. Felix had a dark olive complexion with a wide nose. His eyes were so dark they looked black. He had Indian looking features mixed with whatever. He also had long black hair that was curly and I’ve always been a sucker for long hair. I sat back down, with Brianna’s legs around my waist and leaned her backwards. I had on a tank top and low rise hip hugger jeans. When I leaned forward with Brianna on my lap, both guys got a good view. I was cute with dark brown hair with red highlights which I wore with bangs in the front and long and layered in the back. I had a petite figure and rosy colored skin with blue eyes. My tits were small and I had big hips with a small waistline. Although I didn’t have money to dress right, I knew how to make the best of what I had. I had a dramatic flair and knew how to choose bright colors which looked good on me. Heads turned when I sashayed down the street. “Hey,” Chatter said, “I wanted you to meet my man from Santo Domingo. This is Felix. He just came yesterday.” When I put out my hand, Felix bent down and kissed it. That just about took my breath away. Then he looked me in the eye and said, “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met. Why don’t you and I disappear somewhere alone for a minute.” I was like, what, I just met this dude. Where’s he coming from. But the reality is there’s a lot of people out there desperate for love, and for a green card too. Like I said, I may’ve been desperate for love but hey, I’ve always been very smart. “Hey,” Chatter said, “Why don’t we take this guy through Ft. Tryon and show him around?” “Sounds cool, let me take my niece inside and I’m ready,” I said. I knew we’d be headed to the l stone wall overlooking the Hudson river and the GW Bridge. Chatter waved to some other guys smoking a doobie. Chatter was pretty well known since he was the big LSD connection up here. They sat on a section of the stone wall where there was some shade by some big leafy trees and the sun shone through in a pattern. I was walking in the middle between the two guys. Chatter saw Felix put his arm around my waist, he came between us. Felix thought fast. “How bout some ice cream?” he said and Chatter immediately followed him, “Whaddaya want Janis?” “I want a cone,” I said, taking out my purse. Felix put the cone in my hand and winked at me, and patted my hip where my purse was. “I got it, babe,” he said. “ Felix put his arm around my waist and slid it down towards my butt as he steered me towards a bench under a flowering apple blossom tree. He immediately sat next to me. Chatter was still getting his ice cream. “You’re cute and all that, but you move kind of fast,” I said. “Do you mind?” I moved his hand so that it was no longer on me. “I can’t help it,” he said, “you’re just that hot.” I laughed. “So are you staying at Chatter’s house?” “Nah,” he said, “I found myself a room in Harlem.”
