Her feet slid from under her as something long and black wrapped itself round her leg, writhing and tightening its coils. She hit the ground hard, rolling over to her shoulder, almost deafened by the sound of Kerry’s blaster. The water sprayed up from the river and her throat burned with the acrid smell of blaster emissions and burning flesh. Gravel and pebbles dug into her skin through the fabric of her clothing, as something dragged her toward the edge of the bank. She bit back a cry of horror as she glanced over her shoulder at the thing twining itself around her leg. An icy fear went through her. Snakes—the only creatures she really feared. She aimed her pistol and then realized it was not a serpent that dragged her toward the river, but a long, rubbery tentacle fastened around the tough material of her leggings and boot. Before she could activate the weapon, Kerry let off another barrage of plasma bolts into the river. He leapt toward her and ripped the severed tentacle from her leg. It flapped around on the wet grass. She scrambled to her knees, still slightly winded, and fired at the hideous thing. The foliage around it flared briefly with an eerie green flame, and the tentacle shrivelled into a slimy black mass, emitting a pungent odour and causing her to gag. “It seems I was mistaken about the creature being dead.” Kerry prodded the smouldering mass with his boot and looked across over the water. “It is now.” He leaned down and grasped her wrist to haul her to her feet. “Are you hurt?” “No, I don’t think so.” Her shoulder was sore and probably bruised but she’d live. She tried to control her shivering. The incident affected her more than she wanted to admit. Kerry’s proximity—naked to the waist, his lithe body shining from the water droplets that still clung to his skin, and his legs swathed in tight black leather—did nothing to help. The last thing she wanted was for him to realize how scared she’d been when she thought a snake attacked her. “Thanks. That was close. It would have been a bit ironic if I’d been killed by the same creature I saved you from.” She realized he still grasped her wrist. She tried to move away, but he pulled her back, obliging her to turn to him. “You’re trembling.” “I’m fine.” “No,” he said. “You’re not.” He pulled her closer and his eyes softened, his gaze holding her mesmerized. She opened her mouth to try to speak, but in the same instant, he put his hand under her chin and his lips closed over hers. For a brief moment, she tried to resist but found herself drawn into his kiss as he deepened it, his hand brushing lightly through her hair. For a long moment, time seemed to stand still, and nothing mattered except his lips burning on hers. His tongue teased her own, demanding and insistent, his lips incredibly sensuous, firm, caressing. Through the thin material of her shirt, Cat felt the warmth of his bare chest pressed hard against her breasts. The cold metal of the capsule he obviously did not take off, even to bathe, dug into her skin, but the slight discomfort was nothing compared to the turmoil in her mind. Without any conscious action on her part, her arms slipped around his neck. She traced the damp skin of his shoulders with her fingers and felt the ridges of old scars on his back. Her heart pounded uncomfortably in her chest, and her blood coursed like liquid fire through her veins.

Entertaining Sci-Fi Romance

I received a complimentary copy of this book as a part of a book tour for a fair and honest review and rated it 3.4 out of 5 Stars.

I can’t remember the first time I read a science fiction romance but I know it’s a subgenre that I’ve enjoyed reading in the past so when I got the opportunity to read and review Beloved Enemy by Hywela Lyn, the third book in her Destiny Trilogy, I jumped at the chance. Set on an “uninhabited” planet, Beloved Enemy tells the tale of two people, determined not to fall in love with each other, who find themselves being tested and judged by a “superior” race of beings determining whether they should allow mankind to expand further into space or put an end to them. Filled with action, emotional angst and just the right amount of romance, this is a book science fiction romance lovers will definitely enjoy.

Ms. Lyn does a good job introducing us to her primary characters, Cat Kincaid, a “pirate queen” and Kerry Marchand, a man with a colorful past. A red haired beauty, Cat, is intelligent, skilled with weapons and a talented space pilot. When her spaceship is attacked, she flees in a small escape “vehicle” and ends up marooned on a planet hoping to be able to find some sort of rescue. It was a little difficult to connect with Cat at first because of how the story begins – right in the middle of her becoming marooned- but once I got to know her, and her companion “Shifter”, I liked her and enjoyed watching her character develop. I liked Kerry’s character right from the start; a handsome man with unusually colored yes, he’s smart, tough and dedicated to the crew of his ship. Though he doesn’t know it, he and Cat have someone in common in their past who was very important to them both.

The secondary characters are Kerry’s crew members, the “superior race” of beings who use the planet as a staging area for their “tests” of the humans that have landed there and members of the “Union”, a governmental organization Kerry hates and Cat sort of works with. Ms. Lyn does a good job combining all of the characters and action in the story and I found myself turning the pages to find out what would happen next. Especially when it came to the chemistry between Cat and Kerry, chemistry they couldn’t ignore.

Will Cat and Kerry be able to prove that humans are worth keeping alive? Will they ever get off the planet they are stuck on? And will they realize that they are destined to be together? You’ll have to read Beloved Enemy to find out, I enjoyed it look forward to reading more of Ms. Lyn’s work.

This was my first time reading anything by Hywela Lyn and I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this great story. Hywela Lyn has given us a story with twists and turns and enemies that is relying on each other for survival. They were ultimately on trail for what you will have to read the story to fine out no spoilers from me. This story tells us the tale of two people who is determined not to fall in love with each other ,they are being judged by a superior beings who are determined to see if they should allow mankind to expand further in to space or should they put an end to them. This amazing story is filled with everything from action ,emotional angst and the perfect amount of romance. These characters are just great and the primary ones are Cat Kincaid a "pirate Queen" and Kerry Marchand who's a man with one colorful past. Cat is a beautiful red hair who's intelligent and is very skilled in weapons and one talented pilot. But then there's Kerry that who is handsome ,sexy,smart tough and who is very dedicated to his crew on his ship. The secondary characters are the crew members on Kerry's crew ,and then there's the union a governmental organization who Kerry really hates and who Cat kind of works for them. The way that Hywela Lyn has combin all of the characters in this great story will keep you locked in the pages of this book from start to finish ,and will also keep you on the edge of your seat until you fine out what is going to happen next. I could go on and tell you more, but that would just spoil everything for you .So I highly recommend that you read this amazing story ,you won't you be disappointed.

BELOVED ENEMY IS VOLUME III IN THE DESTINY TRILOGY. IT IS A SCIENCE FICTION ROMANCE READ. IT CAN BE READ AS A STAND ALONE. WE ARE INTRODUCED TO CAT KINCAID WHO CRASHED LANDED ON A PLANET. KERRY MERCHANT AND THE CREW OF THE DESTINY INVESTIGATE A DISTRESS SIGNAL AND ARE ATTACKED BY UNKNOWN ASSAILANTS. CAT SAVES KERRY AND THEY ARE BOTH ARE STRANDED ON THE PLANET. CAT AND KERRY HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER FIGHTING UNKNOWN ASSAILANTS AND THEIR FEELING FOR ONE ANOTHER. WILL THEY SURVIVE AND LEARN TO TRUST ONE ANOTHER? WILL CAT AND KERRY BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO DENY THEIR FEELING FOR ONE ANOTHER?

BELOVED ENEMY IS VERY ENJOYABLE READ FILLED WITH LOTS OF ACTION AND SOME VERY INTERESTING CHARACTERS. IT WAS NICE GETTING TO KNOW CAT AND KERRY. BOTH ARE VERY COMPLICATED CHARACTERS WHO HAVE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH AND ARE VERY STRONG. THE MORE I LEARNED ABOUT THEM THE MORE I LIKED THEM MORE AND MORE. I LOVED THE CONSTANT BICKERING BETWEEN CAT AND KERRY. THE ATTRACTION WAS PREVIOUS OBVIOUSLY. I LOVED THE STORY ABOUT ALIENS PUTTING THEM AND THE CREW THROUGH TESTS TO DETERMINE IF MANKIND WAS WORTH SAVING. I WAS GLAD WHEN CAT AND KERRY FINALLY ARE TOGETHER. THEY WERE MEANT FOR EACH OTHER.

IF YOU LOVE SCIENCE FICTION OR IF YOU LOVE A GOOD ACTION BOOK WITH SOME

ROMANCE, I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND YOU READ BELOVED ENEMY AND THIS SERIES. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO READING MORE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES AND BY THIS AUTHOR. I LOVE HER WRITING.
