Besides Jenkins, SOLDIER'S GAP includes multiple characters such as Mingo Jones, the night deputy and Moe Plesiac, Jenkins' genius of a young neighbor for whom he acts as a substitute father or unrelated older brother, whichever you perceive. The interplay between these characters and the sharp dialogue furnish most of the humor. Mingo, for instance, minored in Native-American religion while playing LaCrosse at Johns Hopkins (the Mescaleros invented the game) and is now so immersed in the religion (they believe in ghosts) that he believes Jerry Egge, the principal, is stuck between the Shadow World (our temporary existence) and the Land of Ever Summer.

Visit to a clairvoyant: "She took his cap off and massaged his forehead. He almost jumped, as her hands were ice cold. "Talk to me, Deputy," she said, "Don't be bashful. You've been having some unorthodox experiences. Tell mama about them." The hands had the effect of an emotional laxative. "I've seen Jerry Egge's life pass before my eyes, among other things," he said, feeling as if he'd just told her about his bashful kidney.
