There was a commotion and the EMTs brought Christie out of the bedroom. Burr, Morel and Lin Baronsky moved forward toward the ambulance, the whole crowd now in a hush.
Christie was wheeled over to the ambulance. The EMTs had her secured, her head not moving, her eyes wide with fright. As she got closer, she tried to raise her right arm but couldn’t.
Instead, she raised her index finger slightly and pointed it directly at Morel’s eyes. Then, in an instant, she was inside the ambulance and the doors shut behind her.
The thin cop moved his car, the ambulance backed up, loud beeper sounding between the buildings as it made its way to the street. Then, the siren came back on and the odd, two-toned screech made its way to the hospital.
Baronsky was livid, breathing hard, so angry he could not control himself. “I knew it. I knew it. I shoulda got him outta here last night. Goddam fucker. I’ll kill that sonofabitch.”
