It was pleasant to sit in the lighthouse and start another journal. Since her last journal never surfaced, she wrote down everything she could remember. She spent time in the late afternoon writing and watching the ocean. The fear of being watched had passed. No more did she look into the storeroom when she entered the lighthouse. It was nice to sit and listen to music coming from the CDs she kept on the counter.
In her journal Jean wrote about the girls and how she wanted another baby. She also wrote about the fear of them growing up in a world that wasn't safe.
Doing nothing but dreaming, she decided to look around. She had never wandered through the lighthouse since finding the storeroom. What if there was another room no one knew about? "I'm going mad, of course there's not another room."
There was only one room and everyone knew about it. "Maybe I need to look closely at everything in the storeroom. Someone knows the lighthouse better than I and it belongs to me." It was certain that someone knew the combination to the safe because they had her journal.
She walked down the stairs to the storeroom and looked around. Knowing some lighthouses had small kitchen and bedrooms, she walked out to the stairs to see if there was another door she had not noticed before. There was only the observation room and storeroom.
Walking slowly up and down the staris, she noticed a section in the paneling that looked like it had been cut around. It looked like a door but there was no doorknob. After several tries of pulling with her fingers, the section pulled loose and she fell inside.
Getting up, to her surprise, she had fallen in a room with bunk beds against the wall. The beds were so small, she wondered if a grown man could fit on them. The mattress were still in place but no sheets were covering the bed.
Looking around she noticed the room was paneled like the storeroom and observation room. She ran her hand over the paneling as she walked around. Paying close attention how the grooves fitted into each other, she noticed one section that didn't fit snug. There was a crack in the panel that joined the other side. She ran her hands along the edge of the gap. Her mind wandered as she did so. "I never noticed the observation room. Do the panels fit this bad? Maybe I should have someone to check it out. The dampness must be damaging all the wood. What is this called, tongue and groove? I will have someone check all the panels", she said to herself.
Running her hand along the panel, she didn't see any of the others that looked strange and out of order. Out of curiosity she looked around, wondering if it had been done deliberately. After all, the lighthouse was built over two hundred years ago.
She became fascinated with the wood and how it fitted together. "Why am I so concerned", she kept asking herself? "There has to be a reason because it's just these two panels. Why would someone build a room and only two panels not fit snug? Exploring the tiny room, she walked around, seeing if there was something else she had missed. She walked out and close the door. Looking around, she wondered why the door didn't have a knob. She walked up to the observation room to check the paneling. It seemed okay so she went back down the stairs.
There was something in the room she hadn't noticed. It was the old mirror on the wall. "Well I be damn, it is like the one in the storeroom." Looking at the mirror, seeing that it was crooked, she tried to straighten it. As she did, it fell off the wall onto the floor. She picked it up and started to put it on the nail when she noticed a button. She ran her fingers around it, noticing she was able to push it in. It seemed to be a bell.
She stood there, hoping it would buzz somewhere on the stairs. Maybe it rang at the house? She ran back up the stairs to the observation room and called Thelma from the cordless phone she had with her. "Thelma, do me a favor and go to the kitchen and pick up the phone in there."
"Jean, what are you up to? Have you found something?"
"There's a button behind the mirror in another room I found about half way down the stairs."
"Have you lost your mind? You found another room?"
"It's a bedroom, there's a set of bunk beds attached to the wall."
Going down the stairs she noticed something strange. "I thought I closed the door to the bedroom, why is it still open?"
She looked around and realized that she was too far up the stairs for it to be the bedroom. This was another room, one she hadn't seen. Her heart beat heavy as she walked inside. In the corner of the tiny room were trunks stacked on top of one another. She saw a small, child like desk on the other wall. She walked over and noticed papers on top. Picking up the first piece she noticed that it was old.
The top of the desk wasn't dusty even after all these years. It confused her knowing someone could have been in the room. There was an old oil lamp on the the desk, full of oil but the wick looked new. Someone was using the lighthouse, knowing where everything was. There were fingerprints on the desk, as if someone had been sitting there.
She opened the top trunk. There were lots of old clothing stored in it. Straining to move it, she placed it on the floor and proceeded to open the next one. In it were pictures of people taken a long time ago. There were articles from newspapers and magazines and scrapbooks of people. She gathered the papers and scrapbook to take home. Closing the trunk, she noticed her journal. Flipping through the pages, she saw nothing out of order. She turned to the last page where she had written the last entry. Beneath her words someone had written a sentence.
"She is mine and no one will have her even if I have to kill for her. My house and my woman."
Jean ran her fingers across the words. It shocked her knowing someone knew all the secret places in the lighthouse. Confused by the words, she closed up and went to the house with her arms full of papers and pictures.
