What is Animal Reflexology?
The cause of any problem, physical or emotional, is the disruption of the body’s energy patterns. Reflexology is a skill that interprets the disruption and corrects it. It is a holographic, non-invasive, hands-on health technique that helps people and animals to get in touch with their body while relaxing both body and mind. It improves circulation and elimination, using a “micro-system” where the entire system is mirrored in the feet, hands, face, and ears. Reflexes are gently stimulated, reflecting relaxation to all organs and body functions. Symptoms of pain and discomfort clear, and the body’s natural intelligence continues to repair, improve and maintain health.
When a person works with an animal it establishes a special bond between the practitioner or the owner and the animal, promoting relaxation in both the giver and the receiver. Much has been said about the virtues of caressing an animal to reduce blood pressure and relieve pain to the person who is delivering the touch. Now you both can reap its benefits.
Advantages of Reflexology for Animals
Up till now, books and videos have been geared toward humans. Now animals will be able to benefit as well. Many people have given Reflexology to their dog or cat in an abbreviated way. They knew how effective it was for themselves, so they worked on their animal friends in the same way. Many animals liked what their humans did, but many more withdrew their paws, pulled their feet away, either because it tickled, because they were ”feet-shy” or because they were sensitive and their person worked too hard.
In this book you will become aware of the fact that the pads represent the head, that the rest of an animals foot never touches the ground. They do not walk on their heels as we humans do. So working on an animal is quite different from working on a person. In order to feel balanced and connected to all parts of themselves, animals need to have work done on both feet and hands. Humans can feel thoroughly complete with just the feet reflexed.
There is one other wonderful advantage to Animal Reflexology. Not only do they visibly improve, but also you, the Reflexologist will get a great lift from the work you do and be able to prove its efficiency. Animals do not have a belief system. They don’t know what these pressures on their hands and feet are supposed to do. So, when you see results, they are pure. The animal is not trying to please you by improving. It is not a placebo effect. It is genuine change.
Please note that I will use the word “dog” “cat” “horse” “animal” “friend” when referring to them as I explain the reflexes. Unless I specify ‘this is the way to work on horses – i.e. horses have no gall bladder so do such and such…” all these terms are interchangeable. The only word I cannot force myself to use is the word “pet”. To my mind it is patronizing and demeaning. You may disagree with me, but since I do not feel like the animal is less than me and a thing to be owned, pampered, and available solely for my own enjoyment, I am not comfortable using the term and will avoid it.
REFLEXOLOGY: DEFINITION AND PURPOSE
Reflexology is a learning technique in which the client returns their body to a natural balance, and, as a by-product of compression on specific spots on feet, hands, ears and body, the symptoms change and eventually disappear. In Reflexology, a non-invasive compression technique is used on feet, hands & ears, which are a microcosmic representation of the entire body as mirrored on them. Pressure on specific spots affect all organs and all parts of the body, inducing improved relaxation, circulation, and elimination. Neither the animal nor the person need to understand why or believe in what you are doing in order to achieve results.
The aims of a general Reflexology Session are:
-to improve blood and lymph flow
-to improve muscle tone
-to increase flexibility of tendons and ligaments
-to reduce pressure in joints
-to increase flexibility in ankle joint
-to induce relaxation, comfort, pleasure and warmth
-to create a link between head, feet and body
-to change the state of awareness by including feet as part of oneself
OUR JOB AS REFLEXOLOGISTS
We need to come to each client (and in this case, our client is a dog, cat, rabbit, goat, sheep, horse, or some other species) with the intention of instructing their inner body/mind in regaining comfort, energy, relaxation, pleasure, and freedom from many symptoms. We are not mechanics who fix parts of people, but rather gardeners who prepare the soil for healthy growth and show how to nurture and maintain proper balance.
Our job is to:
-produce a balance of energy within the body
-support the process of change, which takes place
-aid the animal to accept the change with a minimum of difficulty
-reduce tension in the body and specifically in the central nervous system
-strengthen the immunological hormone system
-increase deeper self-awareness of their body
-create a link between front and back of body, side to side
-create awareness of the hind feet and their position in space
-support the body's natural cleansing process
-maintain muscle tone balance
-stop the continuation of manifested symptoms
-prevent further development of those or new symptoms
-induce pleasure
-teach correct choice of shoes (this for horses, donkeys, mules)
-instruct animals in appropriate movement techniques where suitable
-know our limits as health providers
-send animals to appropriate consultants when they are needed
Pleasure and the ability to feel is a sign of health. In health we lose our awareness of body, much as a child is unaware of body, yet uses all its parts. Think about it – are you aware of your pinky finger or pinky toe? Now that I mention it, yes, you feel its energy, but before I did, you accepted its presence with no feeling. That’s because it isn’t hurt. When something hurts you become aware of it constantly. Think of a mosquito bite. It itches dreadfully until you pull your attention away from it. The premise is that energy flows where attention goes.
One of the first things to observe in any animal is how it walks. Sometimes you think an animal is limping, but aren’t quite sure. Watch its head as it walks. If it is bobbing up and down, that is a sign of "foot" or "hand" pain or stiffness. Watch its tail as it walks when it is relaxed. Whichever way it bends, right or left is pointing to the side where the hip or knee is hurting or stressed.
