self-righteous spate of moral prudence, Bill takes leave of the farm woman to re-join his partner, who is struggling to recover from wounds of both the flesh and the heart.

As he rode into Big Lode in the red glow from the setting sun, a pang of nostalgic longing hit him in the gut. Kerosene lamps were lit behind windows as folks settled down to supper, and only a few souls were out and about parading the boards. A handful of wagons and buggies headed out of town toward surrounding homesteads and small ranches, leaving the streets almost deserted.
Guiding Rocket down through the middle of town, Bill rode toward the livery stable, for the needs of his horse had priority over his own rumbling stomach. From a saloon at the south end of town came sounds of piano music, laughter and shouts, cussing and yelling, with a few vigorous whoops thrown in for good measure. He turned his head toward the noise, mentally savoring the taste of a beer. Swinging a well-muscled leg over the saddlehorn he alit on the hardpan, stretching his powerful arms and flexing his six-foot, four-inch frame...

Best book I've ever read! All eight books in the series are connected through a diverse characterization! Wonderful writing!
