Jonathan Maberry's VAMPIRE UNIVERSE: The Dark World of Supernatural Beings That Haunt Us, Hunt Us, and Hunger for Us, is an encyclopedic compendium of mythological creatures, some so obscure and exotic in name as to surprise even the most erudite of mythologists. Monsters such as the Boitatá of Brazil, a tall, upright walking creature with a man's body but a bull's head, and hooves for feet (which brings to mind the Mediterranean Minotaur, one of the representations of the bull-god Mithras, so popular in Spain two thousand years ago), or the Kwakwakalanooksiwae, a giant man-eating raven of Canada's Kwakiutl Indians, are but two examples. Then there are the more familiar kelpies and Sidhe of Keltic mythology (I use here the less recognized "Kelt" instead of the Anglicized "Celt," in deference to Gaelic vernacular), along with a host of other international deities and demons. Included in the book are sidebars that summarily inform the reader of ancient beliefs and practices around the world. The author also alludes to pagan pharmacopeia now and again, and has included in the volume lovely illustrations drawn by various artists.
