“From my big book, I call the person with the name of Mavis. Standing in line, I’m calling Mavis Brook.”

No one answered. There were thousands of people waiting in church pews, and some were waiting in a line in the long aisle below a curved staircase. It was hard to hear a name being called out by the man with long white hair, and a long white beard, who was wearing a gold robe with gold cords tied around his waist. Standing on billowing white clouds in the soft blue sky, he looked so regal.

“Again, calling the name of Mavis Brook from my big book. Mavis Brook from Louisiana. If you don’t answer on this call, you shall lose your turn to enter the Pearly Gates. This is St. Peter calling you. Last call.”

“I heard my name,” she told the lady she was speaking to in line. “I’m right here! I’ll be up the stairs in a minute. Please don’t call another name. I’m Mavis.”

Mavis was running to the front of the line in a long wedding dress and veil followed by a kaleidoscope of butterflies. Her white satin high heel shoes were glowing through the white clouds as she took each step up the stairs to get to St. Peter’s Gates. She was a young lady again.

“I made it. Here I am, St. Peter. I’m ready to be reincarnated into a rich family. Please sir, I don’t want to be poor again. I’ve been here several times before.”

“And what, may I ask, makes you think you can automatically be reincarnated at this moment? We have different realms of spiritual degrees that you must meet before you go back to Earth.” St. Peter’s voice was deep, but not scary. Mavis felt very relaxed in his presence.

“Sir, I see some things have changed on this level, but I’ve lived a good life this time around again and I’ve always been sent to be reincarnated when I asked. But, I must say that I have no idea what I’m doing here young and in this long wedding dress and a veil. I know I was 88 years old when I died. I think I slipped away in my sleep. But I lived in an old house. I don’t want to go back there.”

“Excuse me, Miss Mavis Brook,” St. Peter said as he looked at his big book on the podium.

“Yes sir. I’m Mavis. Oh, do I call you sir? Or maybe I should call you… your honor, or your majesty?”

“Sir, is fine,” St. Peter answered rolling his eyes. “I’m sure you were a real kick when you were 88, but you just can’t immediately go back to earth anymore. Things must be sorted out before you go back.”

“Sorted out? Like what? I don’t remember sorting out anything when I died before. Things have changed.”

“That’s not my department. Here is your ticket number. This will tell you where to go and what you need to do to get what you want in another life.”

“Okay, that shouldn’t be too hard. Thank you. Oh, by the way, is this Heaven, or did that change too?” Mavis smiled.

“To some it’s Heaven. To others it’s simply their spiritual place. Some call it Paradise and others Nirvana. Whatever you believe is fine with us. Stay positive.”

Mavis bowed to St. Peter and passed through the Pearly Gates. “Wow, every time I come here I always think this place is so awesome. I may want to stay here for a while. This is better than where I was before. I like it here. It’s Heaven to me.”

Gold tinsel hung overhead and there were little twinkling lights everywhere. People of all ages were walking and looking for the place that was written on their ticket, so instead of disrupting them to ask where she had to go, she did the same thing. On her ticket, it said, Aisle 88-Corridor M.

“Huh, I’ll keep walking around here until I see Aisle 88. I bet the 88 is for the age that I died and the M is for Mavis. I can’t remember everything after being away from here for 88 years, and so many things are different.”

She walked for an hour. Her feet were aching with her high heels on, so she took her shoes off and walked bare footed. Holding her shoes in one hand and her ticket in the other, she finally saw Aisle 88. There was another line, so she kept walking until she saw Corridor M. When she found M, this line was much shorter.

She began talking to the lady in front of her. “Hi, my name is Mavis. Have you been here before? I feel very comfortable here. I must be an old soul, because I know I was here a few times before, but this time I want to go back to earth… reborn into a very rich family. I don’t want to be poor again. It seems every time I go back… I’m poor.”

“Hi Mavis. No, I haven’t been here before. I have no idea what I’m doing here.” The lady began to cry.

“Oh, I can help you with this. See, you died on earth and now you will see where you need to go this time. But I don’t know what needs to be sorted out. I must have forgotten that part or it’s something new. Please don’t cry. Everything will be fine.”

“I died? I don’t remember dying before! Oh, my God. I died? How will my children know where I am? Where are all of my things?”

“Oh, my God. I can tell you are new at dying. Your children and all of your family already know you died. They are mourning. They are missing you, too. I know you’ve been to funerals. Right now, I bet they’re making your arrangements. You know how that works?”

“Yes… but I have things left that I wanted to do and more places I wanted to see.” She kept sobbing.

“You have nothing here but yourself. You must be a new soul to not remember being here before. I see you’re in a pretty pink nightgown. Were you 88 years old when you died?”

“Yes, I am 88 years old. How do you know this?”

“Because I have a ticket with Aisle 88, and I was 88 too when I died in my sleep.”

“Then what are you doing in your wedding dress and looking like you’re 20?”

“I was 20 when I got married. I don’t know what I’m doing in this wedding dress right now. I was married to Charlie, and I got married in a blue suit. That part has me stumped. I guess I’ll find out when I get into Corridor M.”

The lady was still crying. She was a mess of tears. She wondered why her husband didn’t meet her. That’s what she always read. People would be reunited with all of their loved ones when they die. Where was her mother and father, her sisters, and so many others? No one was there.

“Oh, if your loved ones didn’t reincarnate, you will meet them later. But it looks as though someone we know should be here to greet us, huh? But don’t worry, they’re up here somewhere. What’s your name?”

“My name is Mercy. I don’t know why my mother called me Mercy. Maybe being the eighth child had something to do with it. But, I was hoping to get another year so I could see my new great grandchild due anytime. Now that won’t happen.” She was still crying, but not as much.

“Oh, Mercy, that would have been something really special. Listen, why don’t you ask your angel to go back to earth as your great grandchild?”

“What? Can that happen?”

“Sure. Many babies are reincarnated from past family members who wanted to go back to the same family. That’s why they have strong bonds. The new baby already knows they are back with people they know. And then, some babies who are born into families they don’t know and sometimes they don’t have a strong bond with each other. They need to get to know their new family. Sometimes, it doesn’t work out well at all. Sometimes it does.”

“If I can go back to earth and be with my granddaughter again, I would be so happy. She’s a wonderful person. Oh, my God. And to be her child would be the most precious thing to me.” Mercy smiled for the first time. “I’ve read about this, but I didn’t think this could happen.”
