Academic Writer
With the proper degree, and sometimes without, you’ll be able to write for academic magazines, websites, and even textbook publishers. This could be a lucrative position for a writer. There are many academic websites out there geared toward people of all ages. Perform an internet search to see what you come up with.
Possible Income: $60.00 per hour/$300.00 per project
Affiliate Programs
You can build blogs and websites around affiliate programs, but be careful to continuously add new and interesting content to them. Don’t let your blogs and websites go stale. Also, make sure the affiliate links are for items your audience will actually want, things related to the blog content.
You’ll want to look for legitimate affiliate sites. I will only affiliate for products and services I use and believe in, as I feel everyone should do. At the time of this writing, these include Leonie Dawson’s workbooks, and Hostgator.com.
I wouldn’t count on affiliate programs being your main source of income, but they can be helpful. If you find the correct affiliate programs, you will be able to earn money from them.
Possible Income: Varies widely according to products and services chosen and your ability to sell them.
Article Writing for Magazines
Most, if not all, of the big magazines can now be found online. Some may want online queries, but others still want you to use their snail mail address for submitting. You’ll be able to find out all their contact information, as well as look at their writer’s guidelines, while you're looking at their website. You’ll also be able to get a feel for what they want from their writers, but remember, many places want something different depending on whether it will go into a magazine or online. Pick up a few issues of their magazine and study them. This expense is tax deductible, so keep the receipt(s).
It's sometimes easier to break into writing for these magazines by writing fillers for them first. Doing so allows the editor to get used to your writing style, and may give you a leg up. I would try for articles as well, but writing fillers can earn you a little income.
Possible Income: $40.00 to $300.00 per article
Article Writing for Online Sources
Many online publications need articles written for them. There are a whole world of opportunities out there for the freelance writer. You can learn to write just about anything, as long as you can also research online. Researching will not take a lot of time.
Again, look over their writer’s guidelines. Some want writers to have experience in a certain field. Many want queries but some do not, preferring writer’s send them full articles.
Look for opportunities in your field of expertise, and begin researching information for other areas. Have a folder for each topic to keep notes and source information in, to look up information quickly the next time you have a writing project for a given topic. This allows you to use information you have researched but haven’t put into earlier projects.
