Excerpt
We found a raccoon today, my brother, sister, and I. It was so cute with its mask, and it was right in our front yard. Dad caught it in a small cage, and we made friends with it. The raccoon chattered, and we talked back. It knew what we were saying.
We lay before the creature on the grass, under the bright blue sky on our bellies. The sun was shining warm on our heads, and there was a little bit of a breeze. Putting our pointy fingers in the cage, we let the raccoon sniff at them. He knew we were friends.
Our cousins came over with their parents. All of us kids talked to the raccoon, and we named it Rascal, after some arguing. He was so cute we wanted to keep him. We talked to it some more while our parents were all laughing over by the trucks.
Our parents had us all get into the trucks and the car. We're going out to camp! “But what about Rascal?” my little sister whined.
“Don’t worry,” Dad answered. “We are bringing him with us.” He put Rascal’s cage into the back of Uncle Donnie’s truck, then got into our car with us.
I was glad it wasn’t dark. I hated being at camp after dark. I just knew that, one of these times, the scary thing was going to get me. But I didn’t have to worry about that today, because it was only morning.
