Heartwarming Series
Being familiar with Humphrey's series of Christmas stories, I have learned to watch for new releases each year. I thought The Christmas Wish was going to be the last of Jamie and Tessie but I was surprised to find a fourth book out this year just in time for shopping for the grandkids. Humphrey never fails to grab the reader's attention in the first paragraph and his stories always stretch the emotions from one extreme to the other, a fact I deem attributable to his experience working in the social system of our society. The thing I appreciate most about his writings are the life lessons that are so delicately woven into even the harshest of circumstances. In The Christmas Promise we are taken directly into the action of everyday life where the mundane can quickly become a frightening and life-threatening event. A bank robbery at Christmas time seems an unlikely place to begin, but by the time you get a few pages into the story, you again see the impact the actions of a few have on the lives of many. Humphrey suprasses, without glossing over, the typical social injustices our society all too often attribute to the downfall of average people and shows the reader the subtlety of how everyday goodness overcomes even the direst of situations. This story, like all of the Poodle series, is replete with love, family, kindness and all the other blessings that come with the Christmas season. I heartily recommend this book for not only the seasonal magic, but also for the realities of everyday life. Although the appearances of Maximus, the Christmas Poodle, are brief, they continue to be a powerful ingredient to the story line, even to the point the grandkids have been known to break into an audible cheer at the mention of the Poodle's name.
