This is autobiographical nonfiction. It's a brief account of my 1998 experience with breast cancer and a mastectomy with no reconstructive surgery. It details the many surprising emotional benefits I reaped from the experience: hence the title. Many have called the book beautiful, uplifting, and refreshingly candid. It is not just for women, given that men need to know what the women in their lives are going through when they have breast cancer, and given that I touch upon many topics of universal interest, such as need for support from others in times of crisis, and our wonderful 21st-century openness about illness.
