Pinky is the first of four volumes of A MEMOIR OF WORLD WAR II. It is about a boy from an Oklahoma farm who wanted more than anything else to join the Navy and fight the Japs. He has a number of setbacks but in this volume he makes it to an island in the Pacific, New Caledonia, Admiral Halsey's COMSOPAC headquarters.
This is the way it was in the early 1940's: The Japs had hit us hard at Pearl Harbor, and we were going to teach her a lesson. No able-bodied man could tolerate the though of staying at home during this war.
