The vampires seek to clone humans through the help of a young genius, Sean Hamilton. It's their bid to rid themselves of the problems involved in passing into a new host every 52 years.
The events of the novel unravel in the length of four months in the ominous year called One Reed by the Aztecs or 1987 by modern account.
