Then from the black of the forest came the sound of a wildly insane beast; it was a war cry. At that instant a wild Indian on horseback came flying out of the darkness. Feathers on his head waved in the air as the horse leaped. Leather strips tied to his arms flung back and forth. His horse bolted out of darkness and across the clearing. He descended on the people like a bolt of lightning, slinging his spear in large circles as he came closer.
