“It’s not gonna work,” she told her sister Georgia that night at dinner. She stewed all day over it – well, when she wasn’t busy daydreaming about Ennis Rutherford, that was. Savannah gripped her fork harder, debating over whether to jab herself good and hard so she’d stop thinking about him.
“What’s not?”
“This new partner. His name’s Ennis Rutherford. Not Dennis but Ennis.” She speared her fork into the thick Omaha steak and began slicing off a piece with a little too much vehemence.
Her sister just stared at the utensils moving vigorously through the meat, “What’s wrong with him?”
“He’s too damn nice.”
Georgia laughed, “That’s why it won’t work?” She began cutting her own steak, but at a reasonable pace, “How many years have you prayed for a decent partner?”
“You don’t understand, Georgia. He’s nice. Like genteel nice, like Ashley Wilkes nice, like he won’t last nice.” She hacked at the steak, “And so good looking,” she finally sighed, giving her fork and knife a breather. “He’s right out of a men’s underwear catalog. I can’t work around someone like that. Talk about a Biblical temptation…”
Georgia’s green eyes sparkled, “And you get to work with him every day.”
Foregoing a smile, Savannah replied, “You’re not exactly helping.” She didn’t appreciate the trivial attitude Georgia chose to place on her current situation. This was serious. Savannah wasn’t paired with a “Hunk of the Month” she was paired with a “Hunk of a Lifetime”. No assembly required, all parts present and accounted for, even the friendly personality, generosity and perfect manners. “He won’t last because he’s too good to be true and then I’ll get yet another partner. I’ll be the only cop that their partners outnumber their years on the job.”
Georgia shrugged, “If he doesn’t last, at least you can act on those Biblical temptations you mentioned. Till then, enjoy the view.”
