Excerpt from Chapter 2:
The door to the homeroom opened, and Principal Rhodes poked his head in.
"Mr. Sterner, may I have a word with you?" as Sterner walked out, Corbin saw a glimpse of what he thought was a book bag through the door window.
"I think we're getting a new student." He whispered to Kyle and Mike.
"Oh yeah?" Kyle responded, barely interested.
Michael was too absorbed in his book to even look up.
Corbin just shrugged and went back to his drawing.
The door opened again, and Corbin looked up to see Mr. Sterner ushering in the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. She was wearing a worn OCC shirt over top a black long sleeve shirt, faded jeans with a little hole just above her right knee, sneakers that looked to have once been white, and a shoulder bag. Her auburn hair appeared to be about shoulder length, but was kept haphazardly in a ponytail. She was nothing like the stuck-up bitches that strutted around Kramer High. She was perfect.
"Attention class," Mr. Sterner announced, "we have a new student, her name is Amara Tack. You may take an empty seat, dear." He motioned to the open seats near the boys.
Mike and Kyle were laughing to themselves because Corbin just would not take his eyes off of her.
"Thank you," Amara said quietly, and walked towards a seat.
"Geez, what dumpster did she get those clothes from?" Bridget, the snobbiest girl in all Kramer High said with judgment oozing from her lips. Mr. Sterner didn't hear it, but several of the girls snickered.
Corbin watched Amara's face get bright red as she took the seat in front of Kyle.
"Shut-up you Barbie doll wanna-be." Corbin hollered at her.
"It figures she'd be just your type." She laughed, "Trash has a tendency to collect."
Corbin was getting ready to jump up from his seat but paused when Michael leaned over his desk at Bridget and whispered, "You weren't exactly calling me trash last year in my back seat, now were you, Bridget?"
Bridget's face blanched white as a ghost, and she turned her back to the guys, praying no one heard that but her.
Corbin cooled his head, and looked in Amara's direction. He caught her looking at him. She smiled and bit her bottom lip, then turned back to a notebook she was writing in.
The bell finally rang, telling everyone to go to their first class. Kyle stood beside Corbin, who watched as Amara left the room.
"Oh man, Mike, he's hooked!" Kyle grabbed Corbins' sketch book off the desk. "He's got every little detail, even down to the strand of hair she was chewing on."
"Dude," Mike just shook his head and headed for his Trig class.
At lunch the group usually just collected outside for a smoke, today was no different.
"So, have you seen the dress Senorita Steck is wearing? Damn!" Corbin said in his usual obnoxious way.
"Yeah, if it was any shorter you'd be able to see her cheeks." Michael nodded his head.
"Man, that is one fine piece of..." Corbin was cut short when the doors swung open and the new girl came rushing out with a cigarette in one hand, a lighter in the other hand, and her notebook under one arm. She saw the guys and stopped dead in her tracks.
"Oh, sorry," she turned to walk in another direction, but Michael hollered at her.
"You know, it's not like we own the place, you can come stand over here," he waved her over.
Kyle stood smirking as he watched Corbin staring dumbly at this girl. Corbin was so enthralled he almost started smoking the filter.
"Hey genius," Kyle pulled the butt out of Corbins' mouth. "That's not exactly good for you."
Corbin flushed. Amara smiled, but cast her gaze downward.
