Slowly he turned back. The wind shifted slightly, McKinnon could see the waterfront. Nine submarines rested at their berths, as the winter storm frenzied around them. USS PROVIDENCE was closest. Small sheets of ice attached themselves to her rudder, and grew larger as other slabs of thin ice collided and broke apart before again freezing. Next was USS SEAWOLF, her deadly sleek form rose from the gloom of the river, as ripples of not yet frozen water surged around her. On the next pier, McKinnon’s own USS MIAMI SSN 755 floated, unmoving as if challenging the weather that swarmed around her. McKinnon looked down on his submarine. Fog and mist wrapped around the silent, black, hull, bounced and spewed as it struck the square box-like sail. For the first time he could remember, Grant McKinnon thought the submarines looked somehow evil.
His head turned, his eyes followed the barley visible opposite shore of the Thames River. On a clear day, he could have seen the outline of one time whaling town of New London.
Beyond New London, Long Island Sound curved into New York.
Along the same line of site was New York City. When it happens, McKinnon wondered. Will someone on this spot see the mushroom cloud?
