An Irish-American newspaper editor investigates a conspiracy to assassinate Britain's royal couple.
On the eve of World War II, England's George VI and Queen Elizabeth tour the Canadian provinces and then, at the invitation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, cross the U. S. border at Niagara Falls. The F. B. I. receives intelligence that an assassination attempt will be made on the lives of the royal couple. Suspicion falls on two Irish brothers who have just arrived in New York City. A third brother, a journalist, works with the F. B. I. to uncover the true conspirators. The story reaches its climax when the royal couple motors to Hyde Park, N.Y., where they will be weekend guests of President and Mrs. Roosevelt. The president has planned an all-American picnic at which the king and queen will be served hot dogs and beer.

I looked at my watch. It was about 4:30. The royal motorcade was expected at Chelsea Creek around 5:30; then it would be another half-hour or so until it entered the Roosevelts' Hyde Park estate. I found the city editor and told him of the demonstration at the Chelsea Creek bridge. He didn't need to be told twice; he literally ran into the photographers' studio, grabbed two of them, rushed out into the newsroom and summoned two reporters. The four staffers were out the door in a matter of a few minutes. I informed the city editor I was going to go to the bridge to see what was going on for myself. I didn't tell him about any assassination attempt. I had to level with the F.B.I. agent, Nick; that was different. I thought about Donal. I was scared to death that my stupid brother had gotten himself into really deep water.
