Excerpt Big Enough to Admit When I’m Wrong The first and most important thing I want to say to all of you stay at home moms out there (also known as SAHMs), is simply this: I’m sorry. I am sorry for judging you. I have no right to judge anyone, but it is especially arrogant to do so before walking a mile in that person’s shoes, or in this case, all it took was a few steps. This is something that my husband can attest to, since he is not capable of acting as the primary caregiver for more than thirteen minutes at a time. As I begin writing this book, my son is a month away from turning four and my daughter is nineteen months old, and when they are left alone with their father, you don’t need to have an egg timer to know when the thirteen-minute threshold has arrived. At that precise moment, their father, normally a patient, calm and collected individual, is forced to either drag me out of the bathroom, or in my complete absence, has to strap them into their car seats and take them along with him on some made up errand that was conceived out of desperation. Yes, I am guilty of being judgmental and shallow. During my blissful period of ignorance, I looked at stay at home mothers as a group of soap opera watching, Bon-Bon eating women who were just too lazy to get a job (Even I am saying “God, What a bitch!”) In my defense, I can only say that Ignorance… is truly bliss. I think that one good way to cut down on the number of teenage pregnancies in this country would be to mandate that all high school girls take a parenting class for an extended period. I am not talking about one of these classes where you carry around a sack of flour for a week; I am talking about a REAL parenting class, with all the full time duties and limitations that a mother actually experiences. Of course, if this does become a requirement, there is a high probability that the human race will become extinct, which given the state of the world today may, or may not be such a bad idea. Nevertheless, I am getting off the subject. I say again, to all of you stay at home moms out there, that I know the error of my ways. I hope to make it up to all of you by writing this book. My goal is simple. I will set the record straight, and bring enlightenment to others about what it truly means for a woman to make the ultimate sacrifice by giving up everything she once was to take care of her family full time. If you've ever wondered if Spalding Gray was reincarnated as a woman, then look no further. 'Where Did I Go?' is an autobiographical work personalized to the point that you know the soul of the author. Although I'm not very familiar with other works by B. Erin Wylde (it was the amazingly catchy cover that hooked me), if they're anything like this masterpiece, this is an author to pay close attention to.

Wylde winds you down a road through her past and present, adroitly intertwining the two. Her life is truly an open book. Her love for family and friends is deep and personal; harm is never displayed or insinuated.

The book focuses on her epiphany of respect for SAHMs, smashing the stereotypical lazy, television-addicted, strung-out Maters, that I myself have been guilty of throwing rocks at. This book would make even the most calloused member of the working class pay homage to those that choose to stay at home.

I don't believe I have ever read a non-celebrity autobiography as interesting as this novel. Only Peter O'Toole's, 'Loitering With Intent', comes close. As I mentioned before, it was the cover that grabbed my attention, but once inside, you will find it difficult to find a place to stop and take a break.

This is definitely a book for moms of all ages, whether at home or not. On the other hand, it is skillfully designed for men who might see this type of work as an estrogen factory, but would dash out for flowers and movie tickets once they've read just a few chapters.

I highly recommend this book.

This book made me laugh, cry and most of all realize that I am not ALONE in facing the ultimate challenge of being a "Stay at Home Mom." Staying at home and raising our children vs being a career mom is a difficult decision facing women of our generation. It now more difficult than ever for families to survive on one salary in our society and let's face it, the choice of staying home to raise children is often seen as a step down. B. E. Wylde takes us on her own person journey into mom-hood and explains how a hardworking woman with brains and booming career discovers that the often thankless job of being a SAHM is ultimately the MOST important job in life. This book is a wonderful read for all moms, but especially If you have recently given up your career or contemplating it (like so many of us) you will enjoy this immensely!

Finally, a truthful, non-jugdemental book on mothering

Of all the books on motherhood, Where Did I Go? has to be the best. B. Erin Wylde gives an accurate view of what it is really like to have small children that you stay at home to care for, and an in-depth view of what it is like to be a working woman inside and outside of the home. B. Erin Wylde's take on motherhood in general is very refreshing, mainly due to the lack of the "us versus them" mentality. So many of the motherhood books out these days are locked into pitting SAHMs against working moms, as if this issue is black and white for all mothers everywhere....which is nuts. It is nice for a mother to finally put down in writing, that it is ok for us as moms to do what is best for us and our family, without feeling that pang of guilt that all mothers have to deal with when they leave their child in the care of another. Also, as a woman who has done both, stayed at home and worked, I am happy to see that Where Did I Go? finally eradicates the myths of the Bon Bon eating, soap opera watching, lazy SAHM....YOU GO B. ERIN!
