Grey Meadows, a Seminole Indian, finishes college courtesy of an athletic scholarship he received in diving which he had mastered off a platform secured on the front of his fathers airboat in the Everglades. Diploma in hand, he enters The Marine Corps. After an exceptional career, he unexpectedly retires because he is unable to accept a coroner's report his beloved wife had died by her own hand while he served on a marine assault ship in the middle east.
Free from any obligation, Grey heads for her hometown in North Carolina to set the record straight once and for all. Along the way, he saves the life of Goth road urchin, who has learned to survive by her wits alone from a gang of redneck tractor trailer drivers intent on collecting a favor she promised when one of the drivers picked her up off the side of the road in the middle of a blinding thunderstorm.
Thrown together by fate, they, along with the elders of The Cherokee Nation, solve not only his wife's murder mystery, they also uncover an international drug operation.

He was standing on a small island surrounded by water with saw grass reaching to his waist. In the distance, above the grass, Grey saw a familiar sight. A huge, gray head appearing and disappearing. As the animal approached, a smile came to his lips. The two of them were old friends. When the large, gray animal leapt toward him, they merged and became one.
A new strength surged through him, allowing him to rise up on all fours. Grey threw his head back. As he did, his eyes searched for the moon. Upon finding the bright, orange orb, a powerful sound sprang from his throat.
Each of the men stopped in mid stride. They all knew the sound. Most had heard it at one time or another during their lives, probably on television or at the movies. A few of them had been privileged enough to hear a pale version while in the great outdoors. Although nothing in their collective experiences had prepared them for what they heard. It was a wild, primitive call. A sound that had not been heard since early man had been forced to compete with the wild animals of the land for their existence.
Grey was on Buford before he could turn around, attacking the next man a millisecond later.
