In “Pieces of My Heart,” Miles is critically wounded by a venom wolf and is at death’s door. The Dryden family hires Breocia to care for their friend, despite the fact that she is the widow of a Guardian helper and is terrified of men. Nonetheless, she has fallen on hard times and is desperate for money, so she agrees to accept the position.
