Heavy tumbled off the hog, turned a flip and landed miraculously upright on a barstool as neatly as an Olympic gymnist. He plucked a beer from the astounded bartender's hand and guzzled it down. Unfortunately, he had ridden the sow into a bar staked out by black troopers, who didn't take kindly to a honkey riding a pig the size of a small horse into their domain. A huge black special forces grunt plucked Heavy from the barstool by his collar and the seat of his pants and carried him outside. Since heavy weighed only weighed about 130 pounds, the special forces trooper had no trouble at all. It might have ended there but, but Heavy, struggling in the huge trooper's grasp, got a hand on his green beret and pulled it from his head. When the trooper flung him down into a mud puddle, the beret landed squarely in the middle of the muddy water.

Medics Wild

The main character of Darrell Bain’s new book Medics Wild rather sardonically observes that “None of us ever did things back in the world that we do over here.” That, gentle reader, is an understatement. Sergeant James Willard is a medic and Bain uses him as your guide on this odyssey of the war in Vietnam. Although there’s enough bloody action to satisfy the armchair warrior, this isn’t just another war novel. It’s a unique and often hilarious look at what goes on behind the lines.
Willard uses his position as NCO of a medical dispensary at Long Binh to build a personal fiefdom that is based on personal influence and fueled by gifts of medical supplies that are...uh, well...diverted. The book gives an unflinching view of all the rear echelon craziness: teenage hookers, drugs (legal and otherwise), booze of every stripe and make, supplies that are pilfered (or conveniently “condemned”), and all the characters that make up any military unit. You’re taken on adventures that wind through the back alleys, bars and brothels of Vietnam to a medical unit under fire while on a humanitarian visit to a local village. Bain has a keen eye with a strong sense of place and he’s able to realistically recreate the almost indescribable lunacy of the Vietnam war zone. All the smells, sights and sounds of the Far East come alive in this fast paced novel.
