Common sense told everyone a serial killer was not a good emissary to send on a trip such as this, but the decision had been made. Hiller was going, and he was going soon. Protesters formed outside The Depot the day of Hiller’s departure. They did not know The Leaders had swapped Hiller’s time with yesterday’s winner and he was already gone. They were also not told of Hiller’s final seconds. The Prison Commander had led him to the departure room at The Depot. He stood Hiller up on the exit platform and took off his restraints.
“I hope you realize what a wonderful opportunity this is for you,” the Commander whispered. “You have a chance to start over where no one knows of your crimes. You should take advantage of this and try to redeem your soul.”
Hiller looked at the man with empty eyes and said, “You are a damn fool. I used to kill idiots like you before breakfast.” The Commander never saw Hiller move, but heard himself scream as he fell to the floor. His left eye had been expertly removed with Hiller’s finger. The Commander’s head lay partially at Hiller’s feet on the platform with blood pooled around his shoes. He wanted to stop them, but couldn’t. He wanted someone to realize he was partially on the platform. He was writhing in agony when the Watch Officer yelled to the Transport Operator to energize the unit and send Hiller on his way.
“Get this piece of garbage out of here, now!” screamed the officer. The Transport Operator looked at the Time Coordinator, who signaled he was ready. The operator hit the switch and in an instant Hiller was gone and the room became deathly quiet. The quiet was deafening. They all knew why the screaming had stopped. They looked down and saw the Prison Commander laying there with the top half of his head missing. It was now somewhere in the future laying beside Eric Hiller. If they could have heard Hiller at that instant, they would have heard maniacal laughter that none of them would have ever forgotten. There was nothing they could do.
“A Matter of Time” by Hugh Grayson is a fast paced science fiction story that bridges the past and the future. It is Mr. Grayson’s first novel and he has done it right.
The story starts with a long running secret project involving the discovery of time travel. During this project it is learned that the world is going to be destroyed in the not too distant future. Only a small number of people can be saved. “A Matter of Time” tells the story of a man named Stell, who is one of these incredibly fortunate travelers. Not merely content with his own life being saved, he is appalled at some of the crimes committed in the future and decides to fix them. Using devilishly clever techniques, Stell meets with some success, but unfortunately, things go terribly wrong.
In the story, an ancient tale, which we have all heard, is seen with a new vision. Also, things in our present time appear almost alien to Stell, yet we eventually perceive what these things are - and that’s a lot of fun!
Many clever twists and turns keep the story fresh and interesting. It is a thoroughly good read.
This book will remain on my bookshelf to be read again. I recommend “A Matter of Time” to teens and adults alike. It is a good escape and an interesting story – with some surprising twists that you won’t see coming.
