I was delighted to be asked to write a brief forward to Ken LaMaster's latest book on the history of the area he and I have opted to live in. As two who appreciate history we both find the leavenworth area a fascinating one. Having lived in the area 32 years, both at Fort Leavenworth and in Leavenworth, I have aquired and read every book I could find about the history of both places. This is the only book I'm aware of that introduces the reader to previously unknown or extremely rare photos of the area and people long passed from the scene. The book covers all aspects of the fort's history, yet it is not a history of the fort, per se. It will certainly introduce the casual reader to the people, famous and forgotten, who added to the fort's glowing history, and to varying roles the fort played in the development of the west and it's role since 1881 as the premier military educational center of the entire world. It is an all encompassing micro-view of a tiny patch of land on the banks of the Missouri River that has left a mark in history much, much larger than it's size. LaMaster's interest and love of the fort is evident in the time and effort he put into researching and writing this valuable addition to our understanding of the role the fort has played since it's foundng in 1827. I am only saddened by the fact that so many of the earlier members of the Fort Leavenworth Historical Society of which I am the longest serving member are departed and not here to share my pleasure at having read this book. It isn't a definitive history, but it wasn't intended to be. It certainly accomplishes its purpose of expanding the horizons of we who yearn to learn more about a fascinating place. John Reichley
